2001 leagacy gt mt

I recently test drove a 2001 legacy gt 5 speed with 60000 kms from a local dealership here in Red Deer Alberta Canada and i must say it drove like a dream. Although when i lifted the hood for further inspection i noticed that there was a distict ticking noise coming from the engine not so much a knocking but a fast ticking noise alomost sounding like it was the valves. I was just wondering if anyone has ever heard this noise before on the 2.5 engines or any subaru for that matter because i am seriously thinking of buying this awsome car. Any info would be greatly appreciated thx.

Engines with hyd. lash adj. sometimes make a sound like you are saying. I thought they did away with those in the 99 but then again I really dont know.

has the cam belt been changed, my aging diamante does that and needs the belt changed pronto.

or could it be substandard fuel? legacy's ideally need the highest octane you can get your filthy mitts on.
