Hi Darkwatch,
I am actually keen on getting a set of Xenons too. I have a friend who has gone back to Singapore for a holiday and he's sourcing out some Xenons for me too.
I reckon they will look awesome on the GT!
Do anyone know why Subaru does not make Xenons as an option for the Liberty GT?
Jason.

No idea Jason? It looks like an obvious upgrade...
I know the XenonOz guys are pretty active in heaps of forums and they seem to sell plenty around the $1000 a set mark. Must be a popular upgrade at that price? These ones seem a bit cheaper but still a pretty pricey upgrade for my money - I'd probably change my mind quickly if I did more late night driving I guess....
Darren
p.s. Nice pic of your new ride!

Hey thanks Darren,
I rang xenonoz and spoke to Frank. Was quoted $995 (can't remember if it was including fitting though), and I thought it was a bit steep. Since a friend of mine was going to Singapore for a holiday, I thought I might get him to do some investigating for me in terms of pricing. Hopefully it's cheaper there. They look awesome though, the xenons. Practical too, with the increased distance in lighting.
I am so happy with the GT. I don't think I've stopped grinning from cheek to cheek since last Saturday. Picked it up in high 30C heat from Docklands and drove it around on Sunday in low 40C heat!
I don't feel like such a n00b expressing my love for this car here. It is a Subaru forum afterall! I do try to keep my obvious joy toned down around friends though. Don't wanna be taken as a show off. But man! What a great car the Liberty GT is!
I can't imagine you guys with the STi version. I think I would just about be in heaven if I owned the GT STi...

Yeah the GT STi is <Bruce McAvaney voice> "Special" heh heh
The XenonOz price sounds about right. I'm guessing they're going for the whole "locally developed and supported" (but at a premium) angle and guys like James go the "imported with no middle man and motorsport sponshorship to fund" angle. Horses for courses is my guess and some will pay a premium for a local and others won't...
I think we're definitely getting towards critical mass for a GT cruise now

G'day Adam,
I spoke to Frank middle of last week...he was really thorough and explained to me the difference between the different types of Xenons.
But $995 at this stage is a bit steep for me. I'll look around for now, and see if I can get something cheaper... :)

Can't wait to hear him commentate on the footy again. :)
Although I will miss Eddie's unbiased comments...NOT!
Oops...off topic...sorry.
I am more inclined to go with the cheaper, no middle name option. I'll do a bit more research to see just how good the cheaper ones are though. No point getting them cheap and they blow up after a day.
Jason.

Thanks for the information Jason.
I know that Frank was at one stage keen on setting up a group buy. This would make it a little cheaper but certeinly not half like what James is offering. I was thinking of maybe getting this MOD for the Fogs as well as I do drive with them on all the time. Unsure what the globe size is though.

Glen, unsure about Jason's offering although the OzXenon ones are.

thats good news...xenons are great, i have them in the clio, but the last time i heard about them for the liberty, the word on the street was that they were not legal...terrible way to void your warranty/insurance...
a friend of mine who has had numerous subarus from liberties wrx's and now a forrestor, reckons that the first thing any new subaru owner needs to do is replace the stock globes...i will find out what he uses...

Hi Glen/Adam,
I would most certainly prefer them to be legal as like you said Glenn, worst thing is to have the warranty void.
Adam, let us know if Frank is going to do a bulk discount. I am very happy with the description of his product, and by looking at his website, seems his buyers are all very happy too. If he is going to offer them cheaper, I will probably be keen! :)

Subaru did offer a B4 upgrade to the lights - was about $60-$70 vs. $30 retail for new globes. I took it up because it was easy to do and the lights did improve...

Xenons will totally blow the normal globes away, upgraded or not. I also got the upgrades on my lights too Darren. Xenons for fogs would be great too.

Have a browse on Xenonoz website after the discussion here and found this statement in their FAQ section Are these XENON HID light systems street legal?
" Suitable for off road use applications only. Not ADR compliant or legal for road use. "
What's up with that? Someone stated earlier that Xenonoz kit is legal
3 months warranty only for the Xenon Extreme kit which is a bit disappointing.

Well, you can get any JB-HI shop to fit it for you and it should not cost u more then $80.00
It has Manuals and its Direct Fit into your normal sockets.

Hi Jason,
Yes the HID Does looks Good on the GTs.
IN Japan, the Liberty GTs are fitted with HID being a stock car and in Australia there isnt a Option for the moment for the Gt and i know they will be soon in 2006-2007.
And i can get Orginal Legacy GT headlights with HID from Subaru Japan..
Let me know if you are interested.
They are around $1100 Each side with HIDS Fitted and case.

I have a few customers buying HIDs from me after 1 year when they change thier cars and they cant be bother removing them..
So i ask them, why dont you buy cheaper ones or more expensive from ebay or somewhere else??
Thier Answer was: James, its the Service you provide to my car and the XELUX looks whiter and sharper compare to those china or korean made ones.
Here is one of the Letter from the Ex-Social Director of WRX CLUB.
To Whom It May Concern:
I have known James Tan since early 2003. I first made his acquaintance through the Victorian WRX club. At the time I was the Social Director for the club.
After speaking with James several times at WRX Club social events, I became aware of his company, Intuition Performance. Over the last two and a half years I have purchased approximately 15 to 20 thousand dollars worth of high performance parts through him.
In that time I have come to trust James with all my, and my friends, car requirements whether it be to import a car from Japan, install car audio components, replace wiper blades or even to arrange dyno tuning and servicing.
James is a good man to know if you want to do any form of modification to your car. His attention to personalised service and honesty is rarity in the automotive industry. Simply ring him and he will find what you want and at a very competitive price.
Sincerely,
Paul Bowden

James,
Just for peace of mind, what is the ADR / roadworthy position on Xenons? I've also asked XenonOz the same question as it sounds like they are technically not ADR compliant and a "nit picking" RWC inspector could say they don't comply and make the car unroadworthy.
Whilst they seem like a smart upgrade, I'm a bit concerned I'm buying into trouble later on with them? Obviously this is brand / supplier independent so whether they are $300 or $3000 they would seem to not comply...
Thanks,
Darren

I agree with you whole heartedly Darren.
The compliance issue is what I am most worried about.
agctr
01-25-2006, 12:46 AM
Well I see it a bit like this.
Some many ppl run blue lights on their washers, run with neons under their cars, blow smoke, have bald tyres and alike. I think the Xenons are fine to be honest, there are a lot of cars running around with them now. I think if they were illegal by ADR standards, no one from BMW, Lexus, MB, Honda and alike would be allowed to run them. As long as U are running the stock standard 4300 Kelvin globes or there abouts, they should be fine and enough to blend and fly in under the radar.

Hi Darren,
ADR is Australian Design Rules (which can be found at http://www.dotrs.gov.au/transreg/str_adrindx.aspx)
Quite a few of my customers had my HIDs on their car and went for Road Worthy before selling their car, none of the Roadworthy Inspectors pick on them...
I myself have called up my Insurance Company which is RACV to insure the HIDs on my car.
One of my Customer went all the way to call up his Insurance company AAMI and insure it and also call up VICROADS to ask if he can fit HIDs and if they are legal to fit.. Both of them says it is ok if the Lights does not glare on coming cars, if they glare, just adjust the beams down.
When he asked Vicroads again another time regarding about the HID, even the officer of the dept says there isn’t a rule in their books for road worthy UNLESS the lights are blue and they glare...
So how do you solve the issue on confirming that they are legal??
No company will try to compliance them because you have to send 5-10 sets of HID to them and get an automotive engineer to sign it and apply for it and send for compliance.
At this point of time, we have sold close to a One thousand of HID across Australia and only one customer have problems with the police. Interesting thing you may ask and think why?
Before I go on to that, let me explain about Lumens in the HIDs.
There are a few kinds Lumens of HID on the colours
The 5000K, 6000K 8000K, 10000K and 12000K.
The more Lumens you go the blue or purple in the lighting. This Customer of mine told me he wanted 12,000K and I told him he might have trouble with the police because it is too bluish.
Fair enough, after 2 weeks he had the 12,000K globes on his car, the police stops him and give him a warning to change the globes to more white or yellow..
Other then that incident, most of my customers will buy 5000K’s, 6000K’s or 8000K’s Lumens and no one has any problems with them.
So, if you ask me About compliance about the HIDs, I can tell you I can’t because VICROADS cant confirm if they are legal or not.
PS: Adam, Thanks for the full supports and backing out there.. It is Hard to find someone like you in the internet nowadays.
Cheers and Best Regards,
dmcgowan
01-25-2006, 06:37 AM
Thanks James,
I think both you and Frank from Xenon Oz have a pretty similar view - i.e. they are technically not proven to be ok but should be alright. Then it's just up to each of us to choose whether we want to risk it or not.
It's annoying the ADRs don't make it easy to understand how to use Xenons as they are clearly a sensible upgrade...
Cheers,
Darren
