View Full Version : Question From A Newbie

Hi all,
I just bought a demo Subaru GT yesterday (from the sale Subaru Australia is currently having).
The one that I purchased has about 300kms on the clock. I would just like to ask, how many revs should I NOT be revving past, and for how many more kms?
Eg. Should I not be revving it past 3000rpm for the first 1000kms?
Sorry if the question seems dumb, but this is the first "new" car I have purchased. My previous car was an Integra Type R which I purchased from my brother. The Integra already had 45,000kms on it when I took it over.
Any advice will be very much appreciated.

I don't know, but did the car come with a manual in the glove box or not?

ahhhh, well i would guess-to-mate that the o.e. damage has been done but what they all say is continuoes rpm changes, hard load in higher gears at low speed, drop speed in higher gears to low speed.
basically lots of engine load up & down with out high rpms.......

Exsing,
Manual says <4000rpm for first 1000kms. Docklands told me <6000 rpm for first 1500 kms? Liberty engines can use oil so be pretty religious about checking oil levels at each petrol fill until you know you don't have a problem.

This is how i am going to run in my RB when I finally get it.
Advice is from a very experienced Mechanic who has built many rally and road WRX's.
As soon as you drive out the dealer load it up in 4th on off the throttle, use 40-50% throttle, keep the rpm above 2000, below 3500.
Try and do that for 100kms ( and not get sick http://www.rexnet.com.au/forum/images/smiles/icon_razz.gif)
Try and put 500k's on it on the freeway where it runs close loop O2, try not to rev it past 4k for 500k's, then give it to the wife to drive till 2000km, then flog the girl hard http://www.rexnet.com.au/forum/images/smiles/icon_razz.gif

Thanks Darren and I Wish,
I'll keep it under 4000rev for the first 1000ks just to be safe.
Darren, by checking oils, do you mean the engine oil gets drained quickly? Is that the problem?

No exsing - just check the oil level each time you fill the car. Some Libertys can consume a fair amount of oil so just worth checking the dipstick each time you fill up....

G'Day Mate and Welcome to the Forum.
Fantastic to have you here and congrats on yr new purchase.
As the boys have recommended above, just keep it under 4K for the first 1K KMS, then you can slowly build it up from there. The engine will benefit much more from a range of revs also, so dont use the cruise control for atleast the first 1500kms. As Darren said, keep an eye on the fluid levels at each or every 2nd fill just to make sure things are ticking along nicely. The Subaru is pretty bullet proof in regards to maintenance but as long as you keep your eye on this and build the rpms slowly at first, you will be more than fine.
Again, great to have you here and Welcome. If your interested, we are having a group meet in a few weeks so we will keep you posted.
All the best.

PS Damn another Melbourne boy.... this is great.

G'day guys,
Thanks for all the advice! Man, such a warm feeling being in a Subaru forum! Took me a while to convince the missus to get the GT...on the test drive, I was giving the throttle a bit of a work out and she came out of it feeling nauseous! Hehehe...but eventually, I was able to talk her into it. :D
Yes, another Melbourne boy. I really can't wait to pick the car up. It's like I'm a young kid again. Hehehe..
Thanks again guys!

Hey,
I wouldn't be too worried abt how you run in the car as since it was a demo, chances are it was driven hard for those 300kms anyway...
Also, have a look here: http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm for how I've run in my WRX (had it for a bit over 7 years with no probs at all) and also my GT(its a year old and hasn't consumed any oil at all).
Bye,
Mo

Youre very welcome Exsing (btw, does that stand for ex s'pore?).
Also another tip, while its not needed, I changed my engine oil and oil filter at 1000kms.
Use a API SL 5W30 full synthetic oil.

Hmmm at 1,000 kms Mo? They're recommending an oil change at 3 months / 3,000 kms with the GT STi

I think a change out of oil should happen within the 1st 1000km personally or 1500 at the latest as with my MY01.

Hey Mo, you've unscrambled my secret identity. Yes sirrreee, I was originally from Singapore. :icon_lol: You from Singapore too?
So the general opinion is that I should change my oil and oil filter at somewhere between 1000-2000km? Thanks for all the advice guys! :)

G'day Darren,
I was hoping to collect the car tomorrow! Took a day off work to organise it, but I just spoke to the delivery consultant Melanie from Docklands, and she said the car hasn't arrived from the compound yet.
She is hoping it to arrive at Docklands today. But said it will still take about 2 days for the service guys to have a run through it. Now the target date is this Saturday...although I'm still having my fingers crossed that it might be tomorrow.
However, regardless of whether I pick it up tomorrow or Saturday, I won't be able to join the drive. My in laws are coming from overseas on Saturday and the wife will not be too happy with me going out with the new car without spending some time with them. Hehehe...what can you do eh?
Hopefully you guys enjoy yourselves and when my car is well run-in, I will definitely join the next one! Remember to drive safe guys!

Yeah, fresh oil and oil filter is always a good. On a new motor, while its running in the best you can do fo it is to provide it with nice clean oil.
Also, I change oil and filter at every 5000kms.
Its strange that SA would recommend that the GT STI have its oil changed at 3000kms as with the GT, it is/was at 12500Kms...

Mo,
At delivery they said a 3 month / might be 5,000 km oil change was required so it's scheduled in for March...
