Michael: "Well, if I start on Mark: every single car that he's got in, he's been fast – whether it be sports cars or go karts or Formula 3 cars or Formula 3000 cars or Formula One cars, straight away he's fast. So that tells you something. And there are only a few guys that are like this that we've seen in history – [Mika] Hakkinen was one of them, Michael [Schumacher] was one of them – they can get into anything and feel the car, know where its limits are on its tyres with not much experience.

"So we've seen that over seven or eight years, watching Mark in various categories, and then when he came into Formula One he's done probably three or four things - and remember, we see a lot more than you guys at testing and in practice sessions, particularly in testing. In testing you do maybe triple the miles of a race weekend, and we see him do things in testing that make you sit up and take notice.

"And we also see him do things in races, even though he might be running around in tenth or something. We keep an eye on everything, especially if we take an interest in a driver. So there's that, and the next thing is his ability against his teammates – he's completely outclassed any of his teammates that he's had. Antonio [Pizzonia] drove with us in testing in 2002 and was regularly quicker than Montoya and [Ralf] Schumacher in testing, and Mark completely dominated him when he was with Jaguar. So that straight away told us that this guy was pretty good.

"Then, coming to the personal side and his actual character - when we met him, we realised this was someone who wants to be a Champion. There's a clear difference when you talk to people who understand how they're going to do it – he's an intelligent guy who realises what's required to do the job."

Funny how Michael did NOT mention Montoya in that first paragraph... when clearly that does indeed apply to Montoya.

I think these quotes are a bit old, but interesting anyway. It would've been nice if Williams could've gotten Webber out of his Jaguar contract to fill in for Ralf this season.

I'm keen on seeing how Webbo will do next year.

In fact, I recently got a free HP poster featuring the Williams-BMW in action. I hadn't put it up yet because it was Ralf driving the car (no, no, no... Ralf will not be seen on my office wall). But I found a shot of Webber's helmet, taped it over Ralf's and now the poster is up. ;)

Great articles thanks.

Mark has always been a competitive person regardless which formula he has been in and I think this has really shone thru in the past few seasons in F1. Joining the BMW-WilliamsF1 camp is fantastic and if Button also goes there, well it will push them both to big things. This is going to be the Dream Team certainly for the next few seasons.

Regarding your Montoya comment above RacerDave, I think the reason why Sam didnt mention him is because unlike the other two guys, Montoya doesnt have a World Championship in F1. I think we all know that he can be quick (one of the reasons we picked him from the CART Series) but just hasnt had the car to really compete. It will be interesting to see how he fairs next year @ McLaren as they pride themseleves on Heritage and Workmanship as a team. Only time will tell.

Bring on Webber in '05.
Adam.

I dunno... the Montoya-Raikkonen pairing will be awfully interesting too. Not sure which one of them will be the true "Dream Team." :)

IMHO, Montoya should've won the title last year, not MS. But he buggered himself out of a victory in Oz with the spin, and he did the same in Canada. If he'd have not made those mistakes, he might not have had to resort to desperate tactics in the US and could very well have won it.

Either way, next year should be interesting. ;)

Would you believe I was standing on the corner when he spun, my heart sank being a BMWWilliamsF1 Team Fan......

Yes agreed that it will be a fantastic start to the season as it always is downunder and Im sure the rest of this season will be great too, bit of a lead up on untested parts for next year. BMW has the engine, Williams now just has to deliver the chassis.

Adam.
