I don't know about that. It seems like I always see these 105-year-old ladies on TV, and they always talk about having a glass of brandy first thing in the morning.
I didn't know which way to vote; I went with hard liquor. I drink beer (generally microbrewed ales) more often, but that's mainly because I like hard liquor too much, and it's too easy to overdrink the hard stuff. When I go out to a restaurant though, or for special occasions, I usually go with the hard stuff. Bombay & tonic is my drink, but I will occasionally get margaritas or apple martinis (of which the best ones are at California Pizza Kitchen).

Dude, go to California Pizza Kitchen and try their apple martini. They use Midori in it, and it's the best recipe I've found anywhere. I tried to duplicate it at home, but I finally broke down and asked the bartender at CPK for the recipe. I'll still continue to try to tweak it, though.

This discussion almost inspired me to make a batch of apple martinis last night; however, I had just bought my local liquor store completely out of Anchor Christmas Beer (from the makers of Anchor Steam). They had eight 6-packs left, and I bought it all. It's my favorite winter seasonal beer so far this year, and I know from past years it's gone pretty fast, so I loaded up. It's a spicy, very flavorful brew. It reminds me of good gin (e.g. Bombay) in a way, because it has so many different flavors that seem to hit different parts of your tastebuds. It tastes nothing like gin; I just mean in the sense of how it hits you with so many different flavors. Pick up a 6-pack of the Anchor Christmas if you get a chance!
Anyway, since I've got so much of it, I thought it'd be kind of ridiculous to make apple martinis.

I've tried quite a few of this year's seasonal beers. My favorite is the Anchor, but there are a number of other good ones. The Breckenridge and the Goose Island are both pleasant, flavorful brown ales. Boulder Never Summer is another nice one. If you like a hoppy pale ale, try the Sierra Nevada Celebration (another one that tends to sell out early in the season).

I got it from neatbrewingideas a few years ago - the kit was a bit $$$ compared to now (prices have come down a lot) but it came with everything.
I brew my own wheat beer on a regular basis so I needed taps (bottles are such a pain). A lot of times I will brew two beers back to back, so I have two taps going. I usually make the following: a dunkelweissen (some times cherry), pilsner wit (my favorite), and regular weizens.

I waited a while before doing it - I always thought it would be difficult. I helped a friend brew once, and the following weekend I bought a kit.
For about 100-120 you can get a nice kit, with bottles, and a pack of ingredients. Stick with ales - they are a lot more forgiving than lagers. Wait 4 weeks - and then drink and be merry.

I consider myself one too. Like you, I like most ales and lagers, but I love wheat beers (which are ales). There are a lot of bad wheat beers out there, but there are also a lot of delicious ones.
I love Belgium wheats or wits
I love German weisse
My favorites are probably the dunkel wheats
I do love some Hefeweizens, but I find the yeast flavor overpowering sometimes.
On the other hand - I cannot stand dark stouts - tastes like burnt toast or charcoal to me.
rfd425
12-22-2005, 02:31 PM
Different people have different tastes; nothing wrong with that. I just don't like the tanginess that wheat beers tend to have. I'm a fan of Porters and stouts, although they're not what I mainly drink these days. I sort of go through cycles that last several years. When I first started drinking microbrews in the early '90's, I was partial to ambers. Eventually, that gave way to stouts and particularly porters. Then, I developed a taste for hoppy pale ales, with Goose Island IPA being my favorite. After switching to primarily gin & tonics for a couple years, now I'm back to mainly beer, and it tends to be ambers and brown ales, with Rogue Dead Guy being my favorite. I was surprised to learn that the Dead Guy is classified as an amber.
On a hot summer day, though, I often enjoy fine lagers like Pilsner Urquell or Harp.

i like lagers, just have to kinda be in the mood to drink them. i haven't really dabbled in ambers, stouts, or porters and i just can't stand any wheat beer. i'm taking some Yuengling home for my stepdad, but i still haven't decided what im gonna take home for myself. i took Flying Dog home last time and let mom taste it and i thought she was gonna die from "bitter beer face"
i'm gonna have to try the Rogue Dead Guy and Goose Island. If i can find some DogFish Head 90min i might take that home (since i won't be doing much of anything at home!).

I am partial to the hi-end vodkaz (kettle 1) and single malt scotch (the glenlivet). But if you like the good vodkaz, I highly recommend Youri Dulguruki (sp?), it distilled at the original cristall distillery in Russia, here on the east coast, it's distibuted by apollo dist. it's cost is rather steep for vodka, but I swear it's worth every bloody penny ~$26/750 ml.

j/k, it'd be great if you came up for our meet, but it's currently looking like it's going to be four or five of us getting together for some beer & wings, so it might not be worth a six-hour drive for you. But, hey, at least we're getting something going. It's a start.:)
I'm actually not a huge fan of most of the Goose Island products, but they really nailed the IPA, and they do a nice job with their Christmas beer, too. I love going to the actual Goose Island brewpub on Clybourn, though (hmm, possible location for a future Chicagoland meet?). Somehow, the beer is always great there, and the food's pretty good too. The IPA they have on tap is totally different than the bottled stuff (or at least it was a few years ago). The IPA on site is unfiltered and doesn't have quite the "fruity" (for lack of a better word) character of the bottled IPA.

I have a recommendation for you: Bushmill's Irish Cream. It's only been out for about a year and a half, and it's made with Bushmill's Irish Whiskey. I sampled it at an Irish Whiskey tasting dinner last March, and I liked it better than Bailey's. It's worth a try, anyway.

Currently sipping a homemade apple martini made approximately according to the California Pizza Kitchen recipe. I varied it slightly by putting in a tad more sour apple schnapps and a tad less Midori. It's good, but I think it could be slightly improved by using Cointreau instead of triple sec.
Incidentally, I highly recommend Svedka vodka. It's reasonably cheap (around $25-27 for a 1.75 liter bottle), and it's a pretty smooth vodka. I shot the last 1/2 ounce or so out of the bottle and it went down very easy.

Bourbon, neat. The stand by is Makers Mark but I like smaller batch/ brewery stuff also.
Rich, I recommend "Kentucky Spirit" by the Wild Turkey distillery. It's tough to find, and a little bit pricey, but it's a nice bourbon.*
*I'm not generally a whiskey drinker, so take my comments with a grain of salt.
I went to a gentleman's bourbon & scotch tasting dinner in early December, and had a chance to try some small batch stuff. My favorite was the "Kentucky Spirit". It's "cask strength", meaning like 100+/- proof; apparently, they add water to most bourbons to bring them down to 80-90 proof.
Again, I'm not a big whiskey drinker, so take my comments with a grain of salt, but if I was going to buy a bottle of bourbon, it would be the Kentucky Spirit.

Yeah, I have to confirm that the recipe is slightly better with Cointreau. Originally, it tasted good, but was lacking some bite. Substituting Cointreau for the triple sec seemed to solve that problem.
I'll have to try it from a totally sober perspective to be sure, but I think I'm getting close to the perfect apple martini recipe.
Incidentally, I highly recommend Svedka vodka. It's reasonably cheap (around $25-27 for a 1.75 liter bottle), .

Just picked up a bottle of this today:
http://www.800spirits.com/store/images/large/7872a.jpg Milagro Select Barrel Reserve Anejo tequila
I'm just starting to learn to appreciate sipping tequila, and this is an interesting example. Definitely a more intense flavor than the Don Julio Anejo I had the other night, and probably less suited to a tequila n00b like me, but I wanted to pick up some good stuff, and this was highly recommended in a magazine I get. I prefer it to any whiskey for sipping, but then, I'm not much of a whiskey guy.
At around $75, it might well be the most expensive bottle of booze I've ever bought. I figure after today, I'll only break it out for special occasions, and I expect it to last a long time. BTW, it comes in a really cool bottle; there's a 3-D agave plant blown into the glass, and the neck is designed so that it burbles as you pour. Definitely good for putting on a show when sharing with guests!

Patron Anejo
Very nice stuff. Good flavor, very smooth and produces a very pleasant buzz...better than any other alcohol I've tried anyway. The first time I bought a bottle, at $65, I also thought I would only drink it on rare occasion and it did last 8-10 months. Since then, I've learned to "appreciate" it a bit more, and they go a bit faster :) Probably lasts 2-3 months now.
I was going to try that Milagro you suggested rfd425, but now you've got me a bit concerned that it tastes too strong? What's it taste like? Patron has a very enjoyable taste to me, so maybe I'll stick with what I know for now :)
I'm also a big fan of Margaritas (Sauza), drink the occasional Captain and Coke and when in the mood, get a top shelf Long Island at Applebees. If you guys are ever in the mood for a Long Island, I highly recommend you get it at Applebees, and I highly recommend spending the extra buck (yes, it's only $1 more) for the top shelf booze, it is truely excellent.

I was going to try that Milagro you suggested rfd425, but now you've got me a bit concerned that it tastes too strong? What's it taste like? Patron has a very enjoyable taste to me, so maybe I'll stick with what I know for now :)Well, again, I'm a tequila n00b, but I'm sipping it right now, and on day #2, I'd say it is quite pleasant. It really is fairly smooth, although when I took the first drink yesterday, I thought it had more of a bite than the Don Julio. I suppose one has to get used to sipping straight tequila before he can really assess flavor.
Considering the price of this stuff, I can understand your hesitation in buying a bottle. For example, I like Bombay gin ("original" moreso than the "Sapphire"), but I sometimes will experiment with some fancy gin that costs twice as much; I almost always regret it, because it generally doesn't live up to Bombay. The exception was Desert Juniper, a micro-distilled gin from Oregon. While not necessarily superior to Bombay, it was very good and totally different.
Maybe the best approach would be to try the Milagro Select Reserve in a bar or restaurant, if possible, before buying a bottle yourself, to see if you like it. Some Mexican restaurants seem to stock a diverse selection of tequilas. I'm going for an oil change Tuesday night, and I always go get dinner at the Don Pablo's near the Suby dealer while I wait. I think I'll try the Patron Anejo, so that I can make a comparison.

Interesting; I went to an Irish whiskey tasting dinner last March, and I found Irish whiskey (like Bushmill's or Jameson) to be smoother than either Scotch or bourbon. I guess I figured Canadian would be more like bourbon.

Well, here's a little bump to the tequila sub-thread. I was back at Don Pablo's restaurant tonight (while getting the 15,000-mile service for my LGT), and I tried Patron Anejo side-by-side with Don Julio Anejo. My first thought with the Patron was "wow, this goes down really easy." The Don Julio had more bite, and seemed to me to have taken on more of the flavor from the barrel it was aged in (perhaps it was aged longer). I would say the Patron was relatively sweet, and the Don Julio was more spicy. Now at home, I'm sipping the Milagro Select Reserve pictured above, and I would say it is like a more extreme version of the Don Julio: even spicier, with a stronger flavor and more bite. It is nice to drink, though. I just take smaller sips and nurse it over a longer period of time than I probably would with the Patron.
I can definitely see the appeal of the Patron as a nice everyday sipping drink, whereas the Milagro might be something I would break out for special occasions.

You should try Sam Adams Scotch Ale if you liked the Black. It is really good. The Lager and Boston Ale are good, just not outstanding. Of course, back when they first started making the stuff, they were about the only game in town for domestic craft beer. I look at those two as the minimum acceptable beer for general drinking, then play around with other more exotic stuff for fun.

I've had the Scotch Ale, although not for a long time, and that's another Sam Adams product that is pretty nice. That one's been around for a long time; I think since at least the early '90's. I remember first trying it a long time ago. That's one you'll either love or hate because of that smoky flavor.
I'll drink the Boston Lager in a pinch. It's decent if it's all I can get. When we used to visit my wife's parents in their small southern Illinois town, that was the only decent beer their local liquor store had.
Most of my favorite beers come from the Pacific Northwest. Maybe part of the reason you like Northeast beers is because you can get them very fresh. Our local microbrewery here in Minnesota, Summit Brewing Co., has some really nice products, but they are especially good because we always get them so fresh. Also, they are available on draft at so many places around here.

Oh, absolutely the freshness matters. I always have local microbrews wherever I travel and they are always outstanding, especially on draft. I think the variety makes a diff as well. Around here, a good liquor store will stock ten or twelve different Sams, half a dozen Harpoons, Buzzard's Bay, Paper City varieties (not all of which are great), but only one or two Anchor Steams or anything else from west of Philadelphia. I make it a point not to buy anything from back here when I am visiting somewhere else. I like to buy local. :)

Tonight, in order to finish off the remaining two ounces of Midori in the bottle, I made the Midori Margarita recipe on the bottle. Ermmm, so so at best. The sweet & sour really dominates the flavor, and that's not a good thing. If you ever try this, I would suggest greatly reducing the amount of sweet & sour from what the recipe says.
My opinion:
Midori: Good in apple martinis. Not so good in margaritas (but maybe the recipe just needs to be tweaked).

You bet your ass it is! As a matter of fact, I'm drinking one right now! :icon_biggWell, after one Dead Guy Ale, I have switched to margaritas as follows:
3 shots 1800 Silver tequila
2 shots Patron Citronge (a good and less expensive alternative to Cointreau!)
2 shots Rose's lime juice
Shaken over ice, served straight up. I should get two good solid drinks out of the above recipe. Early indications are that this is a fairly strong mix, and it tastes pretty darn good, too! ;)
Real margaritas FTW!!!!

I tried a new tequila tonight: Tres Generaciones Anejo. Didn't really like it. I don't know what it was, but it had sort of an aftertaste that I just didn't find pleasant. Halfway through it, I ordered a shot of Don Julio Anejo to drink side by side, and I much preferred the Don Julio. In fact, the Don Julio, especially the last few sips, was damn tasty!
Now, I'm at home drinking my Milagro Select Barrel Reserve Anejo, and it is even better than the Don Julio. It's hard to stop with this stuff. Every sip puts a smile on my face.:) It sure didn't take me long to learn to appreciate tequila!
Oh yeah, for the record, I'm drinking Rogue Dead Guy Ale alongside it.

Going to pick up some Dead Guys for the weekend. :cool:I don't know, I just didn't really enjoy the Tres Generaciones. In the last month, I've tried the Milagro Select Barrel Reserve Anejo, the Don Julio Anejo, the Patron Anejo, and the Patron Reposado, and I like them all except the Tres Generaciones. But, hey, everybody's taste is different.
There's a regular Milagro that is considerably less expensive than the SBR, but I haven't tried it. The bottle I have of the SBR Anejo has gone down a lot faster than I thought it would. It's just about gone, and I've had it maybe three weeks. They got another bottle in at my neighborhood liquor store, but I'm thinking of maybe trying the SBR Reposado instead, which is on sale at another store for like $53 (i.e. ~$20-25 cheaper than the anejo at my neighborhood store). These are rather pleasant dilemmas to have...:icon_bigg
This weekend looks to be a hardcore beer drinking weekend, as I am going ice fishing in northern Minnesota with my cousin. The first beers will likely be cracked before 8am on Saturday, and they will keep flowing right through to bedtime. My cousin wants to try some local Minnesota microbrews, so I'll have to see what I can find tomorrow.
This is sort of turning into "the alcoholic thread that never ends..."

^^^^That's the first stuff I ever really got drunk on (not that particular brand, but 190 proof grain alcohol, mixed with Kool-Aid). I was 16, and at a college party at the University of Illinois. It mixed so well with the Kool-Aid that I just kept slugging them. The guys making the drinks did a good job of keeping the booze level to just below the threshold where you could taste it. Before the end of the night, I had puked all over the dorm bathroom.:( I had a great time, though.
I never had the guts to do a full shot of that stuff, but I did fill up the bottle cap and shoot it once. It's weird; it basically evaporates on the way down your throat.
Tonight, I worked on my St. Patrick's Day mini beer tour at the Old Chicago restaurant/bar. I drank a pint of Guiness, a pint of Smithwick's, and a shot of Bushmill's Irish Whiskey. I have to drink like six more specific Irish beers there by St. Patrick's Day in order to earn a t-shirt or whatever the token prize is.
I'm sure there are a few more beers in my future tonight before I go to bed.

Don Julio 1942
I've become a fan of the regular Don Julio Anejo after trying it side by side with some other premium tequilas (e.g. Patron Anejo and Tres Generaciones Anejo), and I had read some great reviews of this limited-edition Don Julio 1942. So, I decided to loosen up the purse strings and buy a bottle. It was around $95 at my neighborhood liquor store, and that seems to be the low end of what it sells for.
It's good. Amazingly good. Not only is it vey smooth, but it has so many different flavors that hit you at different points in the sip. It has hints of vanilla and coconut at first, but as you swallow it, you can tell that it was aged in a whiskey barrel.
As much as I like the Milagro Select Barrel Reserve Anejo, if I had to recommend an anejo tequila I've tried, this would be at the top of the list. This is a spirit that I would be proud to serve to my friends who enjoy fine beer, wine, and liquor.
In fact, I'm going to go pour myself a little bit more.

Okay, I just want to follow up on the last post. This stuff (the Don Julio 1942) starts out like you are sipping a liqueur, with vanilla, honey, and coconut hints. Then in the middle, it briefly almost seems like you are drinking bourbon, a flavor which I assume is acquired in the aging process. But then, the finish is so clean. When I (rarely) drink bourbon, it always has a lingering aftertaste that is unpleasant to me, but this tequila replaces that with a very nice aftertaste that makes me want to sip some more. Amazing stuff.

The regular Don Julio Anejo has become a favorite of mine for it's flavor, and I've read so many raving reviews of this Don Julio 1942 that I decided to ask my neighborhood liquor store if they could get it. The prices I had seen on the internet ranged from $99 to $125 or so, so I was amazed when this store told me it was going to be $95, which is still the most I've ever spent on a bottle of booze.
I talk about beer and booze a lot with the two guys that run this liquor store, and one of them is a tequila enthusiast, so I told him when the bottle came in, I'd pop it open and let him try a sip. He said great, he had a bottle of Jose Cuervo Reserva de Familia (a limited edition Cuervo product that sells for $75-80/bottle) that he'd bring in, so we could do a side-by-side tasting. This guy's pretty serious; he also brought in two snifters for us to drink out of. The Cuervo Reserva was good -- it was darker and had more of a wood or smoky flavor than the 1942. It was nice to try another top-shelf brand without having to buy it, and I think he really appreciated being able to sample the 1942.

There's nothing worse than when you order a drink and it's too weak, but too strong can be a problem too (although it's easier to rectify). It has to be really strong for me to consider it too strong, but when they make it like you described, it can be hard to choke down a drink. I think that is often a sign of a bartender that is either inexperienced or a tip-fisherman, who thinks he is doing the customers a favor. There are some experienced bartenders that make drinks that way though, because many of their customers want super-strong drinks. The bar on the first floor of the Chicago Board of Trade building is like that; they basically fill your glass up with gin (or whatever), and then splash a tiny bit of tonic (or whatever) on top.
That kind of brings up why I like the regular Bombay gin over the Bombay Sapphire. The regular stuff is 86 proof, vs. 94 proof for the Sapphire, which means you can put more of the regular Bombay in a drink before you get overwhelmed by the alcohol taste.
I think it's official: I am now the IWannaSportSedan of the booze thread.

Yeah, there is a fine line where the drink mix is just right. I like to have the booze amount be just below the point where the alcohol taste starts overwhelming the flavor.
Don't give up on Bombay yet. Try it sometime when you are someplace where you know they make good drinks. I'm not saying it will necessarily become your favorite like it is mine, but it's definitely worth a try.
I have recently fallen in love with the following two drinks
1. Black and Blue. Guinness mixed with a blueberry heffenwiesen preferable sea dog or blue moon. pour the heff first then pour the Guinness over a spoon so it separates the two beers.
2. Vodka tonic. Grey goose to be exact, with tonic and a Lime wedge.

So I'm going to stop drinking beer....what do you guys think is a good replacement for beer, like for when you're just kickin it w/ some buddies or something, nothing hardcore. :)That's a tough question. Why are you giving up the beer? I love gin & tonics, tequila, and the occasional apple martini, but there are times when nothing but a beer will do. Also, beer is convenient for many occasions, because you can just pop it open and drink it right out of the container.
Mixed drinks don't necessarily have to be hardcore. They don't necessarily have to have more alcohol in them than a beer. What drink you should try totally depends on your taste. Gin & tonics, vodka tonics, whiskey & Cokes, and margaritas are some of the more popular mixed drinks. They're more trouble to make than just opening a beer, though.
There are some self-contained drinks other than beer: hard lemonade, hard cider, and the Smirnoff and Jack Daniel's products that have their liquor mixed with juice or a fruit drink or whatever.
Is it because you don't like beer? Maybe you just haven't found the right beer yet.

And what kind of beer are you giving up? Are you trying to get away from drinking a case of Bud over the weekend? Actually, I'm running out of ideas. I mean, you could drink wine, but that seems kind of girly when you're hanging out with buddies.
Mixed drinks don't have to be that hardcore, and neither does straight liquor for that matter, if you find something you like and you can nurse it. I like to sip tequila, but I make a shot last quite a while. Someone mentioned Scotch above; other kinds of whiskey are popular for sipping as well.

rfd425, I just caught up on your continued reviews of the Don Julio & Milagro Select.
A little over a month ago, on an "epic" Friday night I had what can only be categorized as my first "bad experience" with alcohol, specifically tequila. I started the evening just fine drinking my Patron with some chips and salsa and after emptying the remains of the bottle, decided to walk down the block & pick up another. Liquor store was closed so I wandered into the bar. There I got coaxed into sitting down with the Production and Sales managers from my company.
I didn't want to switch drinks halfway through the night, but this is a small town bar/grill/bowling alley, so as you might have guessed, all they had was crap tequila... Still, I don't often get the chance to shoot the shit with the "bosses", especially while intoxicated so I sucked it up and drank the crappy tequila while hangin out with them, along with several glasses of water to try and keep afloat.
Long story short, I had a good time, talked my way into a transfer/promotion and raise, and even managed to walk home fine, but by then it was too late - empty stomach and lots of bad + good tequila & the rest of the night did not go so well. Anyway, I haven't drank anything since, but I've been meaning to try one of your suggestions, so perhaps I'll suck it up, get back on the horse and go eat some mexican tonight. The Milagro sounds like too much for my taste, but if it's available, I'll definitely try the Don Julio.

Bad tequila has got to be the WORST thing ever.Agreed! There is a good reason why people came up with the idea of salt & lime to mask the taste. Speaking of which, my wife and I were eating out at Don Pablo's (a Mexican restaurant chain) the other night, and I ordered a shot of Don Julio, but I forgot to tell them "no salt & lime". So, of course they automatically brought it to me with salt all around the rim of the glass, along with a lime wedge stuck on there. I did my best to wipe the salt & lime juice off of the rim of the glass, but it noticeably corrupted the flavor of the tequila. I sent a feedback response on their website when I got home, suggesting that they ask the customer if he wants salt & lime when a shot of top-shelf tequila is ordered.
The lengthy review a few posts up is for the Don Julio 1942, which is a special-edition anejo, but I like the regular Don Julio Anejo a lot, as well. The Milagro Select Barrel Reserve Anejo is good if you see it at a bar or restaurant, but I can understand not wanting to spend that much on a whole bottle without knowing whether or not you're going to like it. There is a regular Milagro Anejo that is considerably cheaper, but the reviews I've read of it have not been so positive, so I haven't tried it yet.
The other day (again at a Don Pablo's restaurant), I tried a shot of 1800 Anejo, and I was pleasantly surprised. I wasn't expecting much since it is a fairly inexpensive mass-market product that is made by Cuervo, but I thought it was pretty good. I'll have to try another shot to confirm my first impression, but at $35/bottle or so, I may just have to keep a bottle of that around at home so I'm not always drinking the really expensive stuff. I already have a bottle of 1800 silver at home, mainly for making margaritas, and it is a pretty smooth blanco tequila. The 1800 line are all 100% blue agave tequilas.
So far, the only anejo I've really found to be unpleasant was the Tres Generaciones. I don't know, that stuff was hard to get down. It had an unpleasant lingering aftertaste, whereas the aftertaste from Don Julio (regular anejo and 1942) makes me immediately want to take another sip.
Nice work on schmoozing the managers, jazzy! Congratulations and good luck in the new position!

Agreed!
Bad tequila has got to be the WORST thing ever. Congrats on the promotion.Yea, Cuervo Gold was the actual culprit (yuck). I can't really blame it all on the tequila though. I really screwed up because by the time I started chatting it up with those guys, I forgot that I hadn't eaten dinner. It's lucky I lasted as long as I did. By the end of the night I had probably consumed 8-10 shots overall. I woulda been fine if I had eaten though.
Anyway, I've heard good stuff about the 1800 too. I haven't tried it yet either, but I agree, it would be a nice cheap alternative to the $65-$100 bottles if it's even halfway decent. For margaritas, I usually use Sauza just because it's pretty easy to get and...well...if it's going in a Margarita, who cares!? :) I just go bonkers when someone talks about mixing top shelf tequilas into margaritas...what a waste.

Kenda:dm:I'd recommend trying a few different kinds before you buy a bottle. If you occasionally go to Mexican places that have a decent selection, you can sample them cheaply before you make a big commitment. The 1800 tasted pretty good, but you might find out that you really like, say, the Patron (jazzy's brand) or the Don Julio, and you might be willing to spend a little more for it. The Patron Anejo is around $60 at my neighborhood store.
I use the term "shot", but I'm actually sipping this stuff, not just throwing it back in one gulp.
A quick tutorial for n00bs on the types of tequila:
Blanco or Silver or Plata: The pure spirit distilled from the blue agave plant, clear in color, unaged, or "rested" for less than two months.
Reposado: Slightly darker, aged or "rested" for at least two months but less than a year.
Anejo: The darkest, aged anywhere from one year to five or six years.
I prefer Anejos myself (as does jazzy, apparently), but they are not necessarily "better". Some tequila drinkers like the more unadulterated agave taste of the blancos. The Anejos tend to be smoother, and they pick up some flavor from the barrels they are aged in, perhaps at the cost of masking some of the agave flavor. Reposados are somewhere in between.
To be called "tequila", it has to be distilled from at least 51% blue agave, but the good tequilas are 100% blue agave.
The cheap "gold" varieties like Sauza and Cuervo are unaged tequilas that have had some caramel or other sugars added to try to mimic the color and character of an aged tequila.

On a full stomach I can drink all night, but on an empty stomach, sometimes I feel kind of sick after just a few drinks.
You're right that there's no sense mixing a nice anejo into a margarita. Even the 1800 Silver (around ~$25/bottle) is probably better than I really need, but I make my margaritas martini-style in a shaker, and the tequila is about half the drink, so I figured I'd get some pretty good stuff for that purpose. Plus, I truly believe that you feel worse the next day if you drink too much cheap booze, vs. if you drink too much good booze.

No, by all means...treat yourself, especially in the comfort of your own home. Mostly, I was referring to the guys that spend $15 on a shot of top shelf at a restaurant and then dump it into a lemon/lime mix with a salted rim (Margarita). Don't get me wrong, I love a good margarita (Jimmy Buffet Marg done right is great), and don't even mind using top shelf alcohols in mixed drinks (especially Long Islands), but come on...if you're goin' to the top top shelf, either sip it and enjoy it, or don't buy it at all...can you imagine someone dumping a shot of your 1942 in a margarita? That's what I'm talkin about:iam:
I know what you're sayin about the Silver too. My step dad likes sippin tequila and I think he actually prefers the silvers. They're not bad, I don't mind sipping them occasionally, but I definitely prefer the Anejo. From your descriptions, I think I may have hit the nail on the head with my first one (Patron) for my own tastes, but I'll still try the other ones. I didn't get out to a Mexican joint tonight though - the woman wanted steak, so we hit up Texas Road House and I settled for their v. good house margaritas...maybe next time :)

...can you imagine someone dumping a shot of your 1942 in a margarita? That's what I'm talkin about:iam: Yeah, that'd be like making a whiskey-Coke with Johnnie Walker Blue.
I'm actually sipping a shot of the 1800 Silver right now, for a couple of reasons: (1) I've only got two beers left, and I'll be up for a couple more hours (2) I was outside shoveling snow for a while, and I got a little chill, so I need a warmer-upper:icon_bigg (3) I've already drunk about a third of the bottle of 1942, and I need to slow the pace down on that. I intended to buy a bottle of something cheaper but still good for every day, but the two stores I went to were out of the regular Don Julio Anejo, and I couldn't make up my mind. Plus, the guy at my preferred neighborhood store said they were going to be getting a new brand in, El Diamante del Cielo, which he said was very good (I've never tried it). I'm going back there tomorrow to get more beer, so if they have it in, I'll probably pick up a bottle of the Cielo, and otherwise, maybe I'll get a bottle of 1800 Anejo.
It looks like this Thursday, my wife and I will be going with our neighbors to an Irish Whiskey tasting dinner. I've been to a few of these before at this place, and they do a great job. It's a five-course dinner, with a serving of a different Irish whiskey with each course. Their chef is fantastic, and he makes some great sauces with the liquor that's being highlighted. I'm not a whiskey guy, but I've thoroughly enjoyed the Scotch and Bourbon and Irish whiskey dinners I've been to previously. They were supposed to have a tequila tasting dinner last July, but they cancelled it.:( I'm going to lobby hard for them to do it this year.

After four beers this afternoon on an empty stomach (two Bass, two Pilsner Urquell) during our annual NCAA tournament team draft at work, I am now on my second Dead Guy Ale, along with my second shot of 1800 Anejo on the side.
I like this 1800 Anejo. It's got a decent flavor, is reasonably smooth, and is considerably cheaper than other top-shelf anejos. I paid $37.99 for the bottle. That's still a big step up in price from the 1800 Reposado, which they had for only $22.99. My guess is that they assume the anejo is going to be sipped, whereas they assume the reposado will be used mostly in cocktails (it seems to be very common in top-shelf margaritas at restaurants). I haven't sipped the 1800 Reposado, but the anejo and the 1800 Silver ($19.99) are nice products for the price.

Bump!
So, I went to the Irish Whiskey tasting dinner the other night. We sampled six different kinds: Jameson 12-year, John Powers, Red Breast, Tullamore Dew, Midleton ($150/bottle!), and regular Jameson. My favorite was the Jameson 12-year. I'm not much of a whiskey guy, but that was damn good stuff. If I was going to buy a bottle of Irish whiskey, that's what it would be. It's initially rather sweet, and is very smooth.

I've been to two tasting dinners each for bourbon, Scotch, and Irish whiskey, and I much prefer the Irish whisky over the other two. I actually enjoyed it, as opposed to having to choke it down.
Today I picked up a new anejo tequila (one of the biggest liquor stores in Minneapolis is going out of business, and I felt like I had to take advantage of their closeout sale :icon_bigg ). I got a bottle of Espolon Anejo:

It was a crap shoot since I've never tried it, but it turned out to be pretty nice. It is smooth but full-flavored, much like the Milagro Select Barrel Reserve. Now that I have this and a bottle of regular Don Julio Anejo, hopefully, the bottle of Don Julio 1942 will last a while. The bottle of 1800 Anejo was gone in a week.:(
