View Full Version : Time for new rims for my 05 GT! Any idaes?

I'm picking up my 05 GT tommorow and the search for rims has already begun. I think I'll stay with a 17" rim since I don't want any less sidewall. I'm getting winter tires which will go on the stock rims so I will likely use the stock tires on the new rims to be cheap.....eventually swaping the stockers for something much better.
So....I'm looking for a 17" rim that has enough offset and is light enough. Since the car is black I'm really leaning toward a chrome finish. (for some backround I've been in love with the looks of the Focal F5's but they only come in a 40mm offset and are quite heavy) I'm looking at a Rota Tarmak II (even though they don't have a chrome finish) but that raises a few other issues like:
Can the car handle a 17"x7.5" rim with a 48mm offset with either 215's or 225's?
Can a the stock 215-45-17 even fit on a 7.5" rim?
So.....Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
BTW...I'm not as financially free as I'd like to be so money is an issue.

I hate to do this, but there are a whole bunch of great threads below in this forum or try a search. Lots of great suggestions in here.

Your prayers have been answered! Titanium chrome 17" Tarmac IIs on sale now at www.revolutionsmotorsports.com. Check this link:
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=612045
Your stock 215/45/17s will fit on those rims, and the 48 offset will work fine.

I also am not a huge fan of people asking a question that has been answered 1000 times, however, I did search....actually....I believe I've read every thread in this section and while some of the posts touched on a couple of these issues they certainly didn't satisfy my desire to be absolutely sure of what I'm doing before spending $1000. There seemed to be more speculation than people speaking from experience. Also...I am not a fan of people hijacking my threads so I tend to avoid doing that to others. I though my questions were specific enough to warrent a direct answer....I still hope to recieve one. Hope that didn't sound like a rant because that was not my intention. Thanks.

The Tarmac II's have the correct offset and will fit both 215 and 225 tires as the 7.5" width is in the correct range.
I'm just not a fan of chrome, too bling, blingity.
That work for you? :D

I too prefer polished aluminum over chrome, but to each his own...

Looks like SC GT has the answer in this case. They're inexpensive, chrome, and they fit. Voila.

Thanks for the responses guys. I saw those Ti/chrome TarmakII's and really like them. Not sure how I'll like them a balck sedan though. Maybe I'll have to find someone to photoshop those babies. :D

Seth, when are you planning on purchasing wheels for your car?

Not sure if this fall or next spring. Depends on how my internship goes and how money does. I have plenty right now but I really don't want to tap my reserves just yet. Likely Tarmac II's 17x7.5" in Bronze for my AB GT Wagon. However, much is dependant on tires as well. Will I decide to go with full race rubber on a seperate set of wheels and use stock wheels (which look excellent still) for all-season use with tires like my Proxes 4's (dependant on how they work for winter's minor snowfall.) Size also depends on what model of tires is available in what. I am looking at R-compound tires right now, but only ones in stock size are Pirelli PZero Corsa's. $$$$ Toyo RA1's, choice #1 only come in 18" size that would work on the GT. Otherwise Potenza 050's are one of my other options along with T1-S's both street tires. Azenis are possible, but would be going out of stock class just to use those tires. We'll see what's up. Although, going to the Tarmac II's would pull me out of stock class with it's 225/45R-17 size. Ah, heck, maybe I'll just try those for next season. :P

wait till you have to clean (4) multispoke rims you'll wish you didn't buy them. i had bbs rk's on a wrx what a pain in the butt!!!! they may look classier than 5 spokes but, they aren't as bold.

BBS RK's are nothing compared to the old snowflakes on my old GT. Those were a PITA! At least there should have been enough room to get your hand between spokes on your RKs. The snowflakes didn't even do that real well. IIRC, it was a 9-double spoke 16x6.5" wheel.
Been there, done that. ;)

Well if you plan on having sets for different things, like race rubber, etc, I'll have to have more than one set of wheels/tires. But everyone is different. My car will be AutoXed, possibly see track days. That's a fact. Everyone knows it. So I will need an extra set of wheels/tires, maybe two.
The stockers will likely stay as my normal everyday sporty set. Have one set for race (likely not an ultra-lightweight as I'd rather have some extra strength and that margin of performance is more than what wheel weight alone would do.) I MAY pick a 2nd set of backups for next winter if I find the tires I will be using this winter won't suffice.

Sounds good. What do you think about Yokohama Advan A048 tires? Tire Rack seems to have them at stock size at $212 each (ouch). But those look really sweet too! The Evo came with stock Advan A046 tires and owners got unreal grip performance with it.
"The ADVAN A048 is Yokohama's DOT-Legal Competition tire designed for the drivers of vehicles who participate in autocross competition, track schools, lapping days and circuit-type club racing. The ADVAN A048 was developed from Yokohama racing technology for applications that include the 18-inch rim diameter fitments used on the Porsche 911, Porsche 911 Turbo, Porsche Boxster and others." - Linky (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Yokohama&tireModel=Advan+A048&v ehicleSearch=false&partnum=245WR7048&fromCompare1= yes)

OOO, I forgot about them. I've noticed more tires coming out in that size lately too.
225/45R-17
R-Compound:
A048 = $212
PZero Corsa= 155
Street Tire:
Azenis RS-215 = $108 per (OnlineTire.com)
Proxes T1-S = $144 per (OnlineTire.com)
MMM, Those A048 does sound like a very nice track/autoX tire. :D I'll have to look into it farther.
Okay, lets not hijack the thread any farther.

Yes yes, new rims! Umm... Prodrive... YUM! $$$ :(. Work Emotion CR's, what do you think? Not a bad price for nice looking rims. OZ Racing Superleggera's? Nice on WRX's--especially the gold color that is exclusive for Subaru's (I think).

Well....I found out that Rota's are manufactured in the Phillipines.....which means to get them shipped to Canada from the US (home of Revolution Motorsparts) I'll have to pay duty on them. I really like those Ti/Chrome Tarmak II's though. So now it's time to find out how bad the duty will be and see if it's worth it.
Thanks for the help so far guys.

The RGR's look really nice but I've already cleaned a wheel design like that, not about to do that again soon. :P
As for the duty back to Canada, another idea is to have the others mounted with new tires down here and throw the stockers in the back. When you go back, just tell them you came down and brought extra wheels/tires because you planned on doing a little racing when you visited a friend. Can't tax you on something you already had, could they? ;)
