I've been a lurker on the board for a few weeks now, but decided to post since I finally got a chance to drive an '05 Legacy GT this afternoon. Let me tell you, I had a stupid kid grin on my face the entire time. Handling was awesome, as was acceleration (and I wasn't pushing it due to the fact that the car only had 20 miles on it). Interior is great, exterior is just as good. And it makes my current 98 Pontiac Bonneville feel like a dog :( . So, it should just be a matter of time before I join you guys among the ranks of Subie owners!

Awesome car, awesome price - it beat everything else I looked at without a doubt. And this community seems like its a great bunch of people to boot :).

Edit: Of course, now I see the new member intro section, so I feel like an idiot. Could a mod so kindly move this?

Welcome!

If you enjoy your Scooby GT half as much as I do, then you're in for a whole lot of fun!

:D

Thanks for the welcome!

As an update, I thought I was going to be a new owner of a Silver GT Sedan last night, but the salesman's boss decided to take a look at my trade in, so instead of negotiating down in price like I was planning on (was close to getting it for about $300 over invoice), they raised the numbers. Needless to say, I wasn't happy and quite disappointed, since the wait is killing me. I WANT to be able to drive one 45 minutes every day to work! So ugh, back to the drawing boards and price negotiations between dealers. I knew the initial talks were going too well  .

don't let those jerks play good cop/ bad cop with you! that's a standard sleazeball car salesman ploy- "gee i want to give you this great deal but i talked to my manager and he says it's too generous." not all dealers play this way.

if you want to deal with these people at all, i'd recommend going/calling/emailing the following= "want to give me the original deal, i sign today. otherwise, got to say i hate these games and i guarantee i'll buy elsewhere."

below is a link to van bortel which is in upstate new york (victor, ny). they deal at invoice and you can use them as leverage if you wish.

Thanks for that link, their prices are pretty hard to beat. To bad the dealer is near Rochester, which is about 3.5 hours from my house. I guess the only reason I would prefer to buy from the place I'm dealing with now is that its close - if I have to have warranty work done, its easy to get to and only 15 miles away. However, I'm NOT going to let them jerk me around, and I will purchase from another dealer if they are going to act this way.

There are 2 others within 30 miles, but I have only talked to one so far on pricing, and their prices are way up there. The sales manager there said he'd give me more on my trade in, but he is staying with the sticker price of the car. Which is all fine and good, but he's still about $2k above what the first dealer would do. Hopefully emailing the dealers within an hour of me will bring back some quotes that I can use to negotiate around for the best price for myself. I know that I've learned a great deal in the last 2 weeks about purchasing a new car just from reading on this site - it's my first new car purchase, since I'm only 24 :D .

You can take a car to ANY dealer for warranty work, they can't refuse you service! Don't let them tell you that.

Also, you should be able to get this car near invoice. Tell them you know what other people are paying and you are willing to pay invoice or $100 over. Tell them you know they are making money on holdback, which turns out to be 3% of the MSRP value of the car.. so close to $800 or more for a GT limited and you think that is a good profit for them. If they give you any crap about it just leave. Oh, and if they have your phone number you can expect a call in about 15-30 minutes asking you to come back.

Don't negotiate your trade-in at the same time as your new car. Always get the new car low as possible, then mention you want to trade your car in. If you have a Carmax near you, have them appraise it and see what they'd give you.

So, in short, don't pay more than 3-400 over invoice. I got my GT limited sedan for $250 over invoice with little haggling. I could have gotten it for less if I went back to the other dealer, but I liked the dealer I worked with and he found me a 3/36 maintenance coupon!

Don't let them bully you, they know you want the car but they want to sell it even more! Just remember there are many dealers out there dying for your business!

Smada,
it doesn't matter. the dealer will just give you a lousy trade-in value for your car to make up for the low pricing of the GT.

Yeah, and that was my problem with the dealer. I got what I thought was a good trade in value on my car from them, and all I was really asking was for a few hundred bucks off the GT to get it around that $500 over invoice price. Granted I know I could do better if I was coming in with straight cash, but still it was shaping up to be a pretty sweet deal. Then with them dropping the value of my trade in, it sort of turned into a matter of principle for me. I don't like mind games, and I'm pretty sure the sales guy saw me go from "ready to buy today" to pissed off. The ball is in his court for the moment until I get some quote in from other dealers. Thanks for all of the suggestions though, I will see what I can figure out to make this guy squirm some more.

Did you try to appraise your car at Carmax? They offered us more than the BB value was listed online. So we just used that figure when talking to the dealers to see if they would beat it. They always came back and said yes, which leads me to think I could get more for it :)

Anyways, good luck with your purchase. I paid 250 over invoice and I still regret not trying to get it for less! Also, don't forget to ask about the 3yr/36mnth free maintenance coupon offered by Subaru. My dealer was able to find one for me!

Well, today I drove my new Silver Legacy GT Sedan home!! :D Got an auto tranny, auto-dimming compass, and the upgraded security system. I'm absolutely thrilled with the car right now - even my father (who rode with me to sign over the title on my old car) loved both driving and riding in the car. Its almost dark here now that I've finished playing with it, so pics to come hopefully tomorrow after work, and if the weather holds out somewhat this weekend, it should be fun washing and waxing it. Its definitely a change from my old Bonneville. On top of the fact that I haven't seen another GT in the Capital Region area - I'm sure they are out there, but I haven't seen another one with my own eyes yet.

Thanks for all of the info you guys have provided people like myself with on this forum - it was the praises you guys gave the car that made me check it out in the first place. :D :D
