View Full Version : Guaging interest on modified USDM bumper

We're thinking of making a front bumper for the USDM model that can accomodate a FMIC it will be made of fiberglass. We will modify the USDM bumper and incorporate a front lip. I need inputs to what you guys want.

I know you said USDM bumper replica... but maybe a hippo-sleek replica? That would accomodate a FMIC perfectly, and it looks sick. I would buy one!

I bumper with a big hole in it would be awesome so a bigger fmic could poke through :D
hippo-sleek is to squarish, IMO

Watch those concrete parking bumbers. More pratical.
Too rice. Doesn't really match the rest of the wagon's curves.

why not make JDM spec B bumper except modify it little bit

YES!! spec b for the win.
Two ideas. I don't know how feasible they are cause I know nada about body work, but they're ideas none-the-less!
I'm thinking of a front lip that would mount to the USDM bumper. Something like the lowest point of the Hippo front bumper or something like the Gialla lip. A lip that would slide on sort of like a Wings West W-Type lip would on a Honda!
OR.... a replica of the lowest portion of the Spec B front bumper. Like a slip-on lip for the USDM. Basically the same idea as above... only less aggressive.
I wish I had some PS skillz..... I could show you what I'm talking about. In barbaric terms, HACK off the lowest lip portion of the Hippo, Gialla or Spec B.... and SLAP it on the USDM bumper!

Do you guys want to use your existing fog lights?

+2 for Spec. B bumper molded. Would it be hard to modify it to incorporate the USDM bumper beam? And to use existing fog lights would be nice... It'd be more cost-effective for the owner.

1. I would like to use my fog lights. There's a couple scenarios for this. You could include a fog light "kit" so the person would pull the bulb/housing out of the OEM bumper and attach it to the new "kit"/housing. The housing on your bumper could be smaller or fixed or whatever by design. If the person decided to not use their fog lights, then you can simply supply instructions on how to disconnect the foglights. Perhaps provide an "endcap" or suggest some tape to cover the fog light connector from road dirt and grime. Tape is probably the easiest.
2. The hipposleek isn't too bad. I'm noticing what people are saying about the lines. The top left and top right corners of the FMIC opening are "bending inward" which really doesn't match any of the outward moving lines. The height might an issue. Maybe 1/2 the height? Remember that the car you see there is already lowered.
3. Gialla design is pretty nice too. Clean and not too "hole-y"
4. Front bumper +/- lip; I would say ideal would be an 1" or so lower. Again, not too bent on holes, UNLESS they're functional. Fog lights or no foglights user option would be nice. Would your design also be license plate ready? MD state needs a front plate while I know some states don't. I don't mind it being like the hipposleek design because I have a license plate hinge, so I'll swing out of the way. =).

I vote for staying close to Spec B style. And for keeping the stock foglights. But how about integrating a discrete (visually) real brake cooling duct?

If that bumper was a little bit taller to make the opening a larger (vertically), that would be my ideal bumper.
The reason I mention just a lip that "replicates" the lines of the Spec B is because I don't want an all Fiberglass front bumper, I prolly won't get a FMIC.... and price. Most (okay..... ME!) won't be able to afford a replacement bumper.
Just something to accent the lines a little more than the STi lip would be SWEET!
And yes.... I do want to keep my fog lights.

Keep all the ideas coming the more the better. Guys, remember this will be molded from a USDM stock bumper and modified.
I'd go for one that had a lip molded in and to get rid of that triangle piece in the middle, and maybe include a better looking mesh grill in it too?!

09-22-2005, 05:15 AM
Just as an FYI, for my front bumper with the FMIC, I am keep'n the stock bumper with my lip. I can cutting the middle section out.......But if this bumper is gonna come out reasonably soon, I might chill and wait.......as I missed out on the lip/grill ;).......
Oh and i'm pretty confident in say'n that all the FMIC kit installs will have to mod the bumper beam, so it's really not a concern to fit the Stock bumper beam, that is if this bumper is be'n made primarily made for the FMIC kits.....
1) Def wanna keep the fogs
2) Def want an open area for the FMIC
I'm easy :D
The attached pic is a quick hack as what I am go'n to do once the FMIC is on next monday....and the 2nd pic is just a hack with an FMIC in it

Just kidding, bro, I was actually right there with you in thinking "damn, that looks s-i-c-k! (a-la Streetracingchronicles)," and was about to petition that brother scans paint it stealthy-black, too.
Dude, Steve, that really looks greeeeat!
Personally, though, I'm actually not sure how much you'll have a need for the mesh. Prior to Winky, my rides were DSMs - slammed to the ground, no clearance, and saddled up-front with huge, huge, FMICs. My last DSM:
http://www.dsmtuners.com/gallery/data/502/20795Ipark1.JPG
*pic courtesy of her previous owner, notice the "VA" tag
Even in this manner, they were never much bad off. :D
I'd go for the stealth-black paint, or do the mesh simply for looks, not for protection. :)
scans007
09-22-2005, 06:42 AM
Yeah that was it's other purpose, hide the FMIC.....I'll do one or the other.....prob go with mesh....although it will prob be easier to paint the IC......
The main point was to show a stock USDM bumper without the middle slot, with the fogs and FMIC.......for people to see what it would look like.
I would def love to see a bumper and soon =) So I was just giving my input.....
Damn you guys, no all I can think of is painting it.......Monday's so far away....*sigh*

1/2 spoiler... Isn't that = attachable "front lip"? Those wheels are HOT. They're only ~350+s&h each though =(.
The k2k2 has too many curvy lines for me. The whole kit all together is nice but we're just talking about the front bumper. So it might not all flow too well.
The gialla kit (lower part) has that protuding corners like the Amuse 2000 kit I like. It squares off the edges and makes the car stance look broader/wider.

the lower lip area on the hipposleek front bumper is a very popular design. lower mid-area with 2 vent holes. GReddy's design is similar but not exact. my rx7 has a lip like that by a company called FEED. they stopped making it so another company ChargeSpeed makes fiberglass copies.
i think the brake holes and little vent holes a bit much. i do like the big middle opening. you can keep it open or you can put something there ... like a front mount. but even without a front mount, it still looks good (the big middle opening, not the rest)
also, a kit that low would never survive my roads and my driveway. also what about getting that thing on an alignment rack or a lift. =(.

Come on - Rommel. You just answered the "feedback" question. A USDM version of the Spec B bumper is the only one with mass appeal. Sure, there's a dozen other aftermarket designs that different people like. But the Spec B would have more universal appeal.

can you guessitmate what the price might be for a painted unit less shipping?
the shipping costs could come down immensely if a few people that lived within say 100 miles of each other choose to use Yellow Freight and could pick it up at a central depot for YF. I bet the costs would be about $30-50 ea. anywhere in the continental U.S.

The reason I ask for somebody who can setup a group "buy" of the JDM Spec B bumper.....is because it was designed & made by Subaru. It won't be fiberglass.... and we KNOW that it will mount up with the proper bumper beam.
If we could get a discount on the shipping that's necessary to get them over here, I think quite a few people would jump on board!
Just my .02$

Wasn't Paul from AVO going to set up something a while back?
Need bumper, foam, the plastic undertray, and beam if you don't want to modify the stock one.
^^That's what I'm talking about maing!
That.....and a set of springs....and some 19" wheels.... and ya golden!

AVO did try to set up a group buy but nobody was interested. You could still order it from him but the problem will be the shipping charge and customs duties.

I personally think that a bumper that is similar to the design of the Bomex Miata front bumper would be perfect...My 2000 miata has the bomex nose and it has a huge central opening for a big fmic like i had on my car, plus two large side opening for brake ducting and an aggressive look. If I find a link i will post it. But I think add-ons look better and when the bumper is one piece it looks as if it belongs. If someone could make a front bumper that is slightly lower in the front, kind of integrating a lip spoiler into the bumper as one piece as well as making the 3 large openings, i think that would look sick!

How about this grill i have been emailing C west to make it since i bought the car in 2004.....
I say the cutout on the bumper as the main focus is cooling the FMIC. You can incorporate two intakes like the ones on the R33 bumper or Evo bumper.

You guys think it could be viable to run a poll to see who'd be interested (with funds) to contact Paul at AVO for a group buy on the JDM Spec-B front bumper package?
