"Rumour has it that the success of the Smart car here in Canada has prompted SCI into bringing the R1 to Canada with possibly a diesel variant or a 1.6L gas engine.

It's kinda cute with it's fender flares, Subie/Alpha family front end, Tribeca-ish side bulges and pararamic roof."

looks like a mini turd...

I don't think smart cars will make it in America anytime soon. If they're not in NYC or SF, they certainly won't make it in fly-over country.

A mini turd ??? This thing has got to weigh at least 1,500 lbs, how big do they have to get before you class them as full size

Seriously, I heard Smart cars were selling like hot cakes in the US, as they are here :

If it has AWD I would seriously consider getting one................for the wife !

I kind of like it. It could give the mini and run for its money.

Of course, being an ex-Brit I am kind of bias to having a liking for small cars to blast round city streets (at least as long has it has a bit of HP.. :))

In Japan it is 2wd or AWD...give it a little more power and I think it'd be a hit, especially in commute cities. Let it be known GAS IS KILLING ME!!!

We should either throw the STi setup in there, or even that H-12 that's up on ebay...Talk about sleeper!

Actually not too bad. Somewhat interesting lines.

it would be sick at AWD & add a 20G turbo on this bad boy to put down 300 whp.. if the car does weigh something like 1500 lbs or so and add some wide tires and a wide body kit, lowered, it will spank at autox and even track events. Oh wait, I just described what an AWD Mini could be

Just as long as I can buy it in pastel pink with Hello Kitty stickers on it, just like the SMART car I saw the other week.

That my friends, would be HOT.

Man I remember seeing those little Smart cars when I was in Germany a few years ago. All I could think was, man if I was in my Dad's Yukon XL and I tapped that thing they would be sooooo dead. Small is great and all for gas milage and for parking, but for the size of vehicles on the road today its just too much of a risk.

I actually saw one of these about two weeks ago at the light just down the road from SOA headquarters, so they could be considering bringing them over.

Isn't there like a 2 year waiting list on those things?

I dunno.. maybe not make it mainstream, but there are definately wreas where they are quite popular. I know here that the city planning guys are looking at installing smaller parking spaces just for smart cars...

Keep them all;)
Any of these vehicles are not much safer than a motorcyle...I'll take the latter & get better gas mileage:)

Here is little FYI:

SOA exectutives are currently testing the R1 on the streets in and around New Jersey. They are thinking of using this car as a entry level / high MPG vehicle. It would also lower ther EPA Fuel Economy Fleet rating. So those of you that are not to keen on them, I would imagine you might however be interested in a turbocharged H6 setting in a Legacy. In order for that to happen SOA must first induce a high MPG vehicle to counter-weight a very high performance gas hog. This is due to the very stringent regulations that EPA imposes on automakers. SOA is aware of the market for a high performance luxury sedan. They read these forums on a regular basis to see trends and consumer needs.

Honestly, the R1 would make a great daily commuter for people that have long commutes and would not utilize anything larger than a 2-seater(2+2) on a commuting basis. I have also heard talk of a possible 4-door version in the works. At 53 MPG, Subaru could really help their image, as well as, put together a great strategy to expand their line-up.

If it will hasten Subaru's advent of the >$100k Twin Turbo Flat-6 AWD street car, then, BRING IT ON!!!

And Subaru Global or SOA is reading this... look for my screen name on these forums. I've got plenty of ideas... PM me with any questions or product planning job offers!

Give me a job with decent pay and watch how fast my plans change from planning for to actually buying your products :D Hopefully with my plans, others would start buying too!

HEY! no cutting in line...I'm want to get in too! I used to live by the Subie office here...I'd drive by and see if there were any goodies outside. I also drooled over a green SVX that was there...mmmmmhmmmm...the joy of SVX

PDXTuning will buy one if they bring them, to offset our purchasing a H6 turbo LGT! ;)

See, that's one of my ideas... bring back a new SVX spin-off of the Legacy GT/STi sedan. Something a little less "alien" and a little more agressive, and something that doesn't look quite so dated. (SVXs now look their age, even due to the design that looked quite futuristic at the time.)

Don't get me wrong, I think the SVX looks awesome. It just sometimes reminds me of a two-door sporty-ish offspring of an early-90's Mercury Sable. It is kinda like looking at yester-year's vision of the future, which the present-day has already gone past.

A new SVX should be perhaps more technically advanced, perhaps a little less aesthetic envelope-pushing, and more handsomely agressive like the Legacy GT (especially the JDM/ROW version.)

-- on the topic of the R1
I figure if I end up someday getting a twin-turbo 400hp Legacy sedan, I am gonna have to keep it at home. It will be vulnerable to hail and theft if I park it at work, and the gas mileage won't be that great.

An R1 in the next garage stall might be a necessity for the daily slog, and the 400hp legacy for the weekend, special occaision, and for when you've got to decimate every other car on your particular section of road, accept no substitute.

SOA could sell em as a package deal... Buy em' both for an even ~$46k. The 400hp hammer, and the commuter for the everyday mundane stuff, color matched, even. :D
