I have read in Autoweek that the AWD system of the WRX STI (yeah, they capitalized the I, because it was creating too much confusion in Japan, and the US...) has been modified this year.

From the sound of it, it gets a new helical front, rear, and center differentials. The center helical diff augmenting the DCCD torque-distribution system, supposedly decreasing AWD distribution reaction time.

They also mention the air-pump removing the pre-catalytic converter. I thought the STi didn't have one of those last year... Sounds like the whole 2.5t lineup is getting the air-pump this year. they also mention a secondary radiator for the turbo's coolant.

Give it a look. They take a 1000 mile trip, then do some hill-climbing. decent article, if the details can be trusted.

If they are right about the WRX STI's AWD improvements... That is close to what I have been hypothesizing would be the ultimate AWD system. Three helical LSDs. The DCCD torque selection ability would be icing on a very good cake.

I want to swap that into a Legacy sedan. Badly. As long as either the final drive can be re-geared to be taller, or the 6 manual ratios made taller, to give it a little bit longer highway legs and fuel mileage at speed, than the acceleration-biased gearing in the WRX STI.

If they would build a Legacy the way they build the WRX STI, they would have a winner. WR Blue with blue alcantara interior. 18"x8" forged alloy rims, with outback-style fender flares. Aerokit bits to help downforce and anti-lift. 7k RPM 2.5T at ~310-320hp and torque, The above mentioned WRX STI grade 6MT/AWD, with taller gears for the highway. Or a twin-turbo 3.0-3.6 liter H6 @ ~400hp.

They would sell the pants off those. Which is why they won't do it. Too logical and too easy. Subaru seems to be allergic to smart decision making.

The US STi does not have the air pump, only cars that had a cat in the up pipe will have the air pump.

You can actually feel the difference in the differentials.

The legacy sti would only appeal to people like us so it may or may not sell, it depends. I know I want one.

Compare it with other cars in it's class, like the A4 2.0T or 3.0, The G35x, Volvo, etc. and it would SMOKE them. It would smoke them with a 310hp 2.5 turbo, and it would obliterate cars like the 330hp e46 M3 and non-///M 5 series with a 400hp twin turbo flat 6.

It is all about press. The Legacy gets little to none now. A Legacy STi highway-burning sport sedan, in the idiom of the WRX STi rally sedan would get their attention, if they build it the way I mentioned.

How much does the Impreza, 2.5RS, and even the WRX take a back seat to the STi in the press? quite a bit, because the STi is that little extra special stuff that makes it more than it's siblings, and more than most other cars on the road. And the STi's press sells WRXs all day long.

The Legacy line needs a killer to be noticed. The GT is one of the best unknown, under-rated cars out there right now. But it is gonna stay that way if Subaru doesn't go out there and get themselves some attention.

A Cover-comparo with a Legacy STi beating the pants of those other near-lux AWD cars, or even cars like the 997 Carrera 4 (similar weight, and a H6TT Legacy would have more power, perhaps a bit less handling prowess...) and people will have to be luddites not to notice.

Get people in the dealerships to see a 35-38k Legacy STi, and for every one that can't quite justify the price, you could have a GT sale, because the DNA isn't far off. Subaru might have to invest in some bolder paint colors, though.

Not to mention the complete change of direction with the Legacy line, since they seem to be handicapping it right now.

The 92x is a WRX wagon with a Sabb face lift, ever hear the term Sabaru it started with that. I personaly like the Subaru front end but the Sabb scoop.
