Rumor has it that Subaru did something about the up-pipe w/ the cat for the 06 models. Either they removed the cat or did something to make it safer for the turbos life. Has anyone else heard such a rumor?

They changed the uppipes to catless and added an air pump.

what does the air pump do? (put more air in the turbo?)

It helps cold start emissions, just like the pre-cat. It is much more complex though.

If you are going to leave your car stock, I can see it being a good thing. If you plan on modding and the uppipe goes, I can see a 05 being better.

But if it robbed power to run the air pump, wouldn't Subaru have to change the rated hp/torque from the 250/250?

Is the power loss really just rather insignificant? 1 or 2 hp type of thing?

There had been a news item under "Latest News" (I say 'had' because it's since been removed) on Subaru.com that stated the Legacy GT (at least in wagon form) was no more. This first appeared on August 3rd. It also said the MT was not going to be part of the GT Pkg. on the Ltd Wagon, only on the 4-door GT Ltd.

Wonder if anyone has something definitive on this? Kinda weird that it was on their site as recently as Saturday, but today it's gone. Could it be that Fuji is rethinking their strategy on not allowing the manual on wagons? I sure hope so...

haven't heard a word about a change of heart from corporate Subaru. as far as I know, the MT wagon GT is gone after '05. funny thing is, that I've mentioned it to about a half dozen different salespeople and a couple of different dealerships...and not a one knew about it. And their reaction was something like....well, people who buy the wagon generally have kids and don't need the sporty manual tranny. WHAT A BUNCH OF CLOWNS! They should be selling Hondas.

The secondary air pump doesn't rob any power and operates only at cold starts for a few minutes.

It is the same system used in the new Forester http://www.subaru.co.za/templates/company/news2.asp?nID=50CCEB16-00E6-43BF-81FE-544741D0864D :

A number of internal and external components have also been lightened.
A new emission control device has been added in a secondary air pump. This device recirculates the unburned fuel in the exhaust port of the cylinder head, and pumps it back into the engine, to reduce the hydrocarbons when the engine is cold. The 06MY Forester now compiles with Euro 3 emission regulations.

my next question would be... well then would subaru care if i got an aftermarket catless up-pipe?

Next I would like to know if an 06 catless UP will fit my 05 and would they instal it, and at what cost?

your next question should probably be, how much improvement would an aftermarket catless uppipe have over the stock catless one ?

I think the only improvement will be in flow if and only if the stock one is too restrictive flow-wise and even then if the aftermarket uppipe is less restrictive, it may actually delay turbo spool-up since there is less exhaust pressure.

a catless up-pipe will provide with quicker spool-up :dm:

I have NO IDEA how this will effect the power. However, I know many manufacturers 1st year production is the fastest to get everyones attention (magazine testing) and later they are detuned for reliability etc. Naturally the down side of 1st year is the bugs. Take your pick.
Again, not saying this with the pipe, but since people have started to hunt for speed It seemed appropriate.
This is very common practice with cars but also snowmobiles (ie F7, SX700, PH 480, Vmax 600)

don't forget the air pump.

i doubt the '06 Up pipe is as good as some of the aftermarket ones out there. i hear the stock STI Up Pipe isn't that smooth.

The legacy gt turbo 2.5 has been around the us since 2003??
I doubt it or I would have bought one sooner!

probably true, but it's insignificant unless you need flow to support 400wHP or more.

How do you explain the GTO and Z06? Both got extra power in the second production year.

Or, any Porsche or BMW product. They ALWAYS get more power as the years progress.

You got some bad info,,Ive got an upipe in my hand from an 04 STi,,it's smooth just like aftermarket,,and it comes with heatshields;)

I'll Say often, but not always -

GTO - who knows they got more HP from a new engine - not sure about next year with the same400 hp (the first engine was a mistake)
Each MFG improves - no doubt, but often(NOT always) yr 2& 3 of the SAME set up will be detuned - After numbers are published. Naturally new models will be improved.

not looking for an argument - simply made a point based on my experience, and what I have been told.

So, you have x-ray vision and can see inside?? The problem is the slip joint....it's not a smooth as an aftermarket solid pipe, but again, this is irrelevant unless you are flowing enough air to make a TON of power.

I just bought a 06 legacy gt limited 5 speed. i dont know a hole lot but one thing i notice from the 05 was a little turbo lag turbo kicks in at 3500rpm and i remember test driving and 05 wagon and i could not feel the lag. could this be due to the new up pipe?

Jedi Pimp
08-30-2005, 04:48 PM
If anything there would be less turbo lag because the 06 is catless

richip
09-01-2005, 12:15 PM
The 06 prolly still hasn't been broken in.

Jedi Pimp said it right when he mentioned that catless would allow the turbo to spool up much quicker. I'm just wondering if the fan couldn't be used to help spool up the turbo as well (a'la supercharger).

Whats a good brake in period? i have been driving the hell out of it. It so much nicer than my 02 impreza rs and i bet the shit out of that car. it never had one problem. Should i not drive it so hard for any period? it has 700 miles on it now.

O ya i could post pic of any parts of the car if you want to see anything. Unless i have to pull crap out. Let me now

Khris_25....do a search. Subaru recommends 1000 break in period where you do not run the car over 4000RPM unless in an emergency or at a constent speed for long periods of time.

Ok, back to this thread....rumors of the '06 legacy and how it differs from the '05 and will it have any impact on its performance or mod capabilities.

I just want to re-open this thread to put to sleep the rumors about the "catless" uppipe. Has anyone actually removed the '06 uppipe? I want to see a picture.

The 06 service manual shows a "pre-catalytic" uppipe or joint pipe. The 05 manual identifies same part as a "pre-catalytic" joint pipe. Is it possible that SOA never updated the service manual? :iam:
