View Full Version : Economy Mode-worth it?

I know MBlock66 asked a similar question in another thread, but there didn't seem to be a definitive answer. Anyone had significant results running the v1.10 Economy map vs. Stage I?
I'm driving from Miami, FL to Charlotte, NC tomorrow (@850 miles) and every extra MPG helps...
thanks in advance

Based on Trey's description of it's functionality (it limits max boost by allowing only the wastegate spring pressure to control the wastegate), I'd guess you'd accomplish the same thing with taking it easy on the pedal.

I'm thinking it may be a good teenager setting (less boost, less power)...

it does make a diffrence, I was getting aorund 29 mpg according to my dash on the highway. And while I run stage 1 i get around 23.7 or 24, I dont know if its worth everyday driving because it does turn the fun factor a big knotch towards boring lol

Economy limits boost to 8.5 psi in 4th or 5th. I will do a check tomorrow for max boost in all gears. I plan to run economy until I get stage 2 this weekend. I'll let you know if there is any difference.

Boost maxes around 8psi at WOT for me in 4th, around 5psi in 1st and 2nd. It made a differnece for me as well. With Stage 1 map I was getting around 21 mpg (This is mostly stop and go driving with some highway.) I switched to the Eco map and saw 24.3 with the same driving.

thanks for the info.
I'm leaving this afternoon, and will run the economy map for the duration of the drive up and see how it actually averages, and post the results.

I got 5psi in first, 7psi in second, and 8.5psi in third, fourth and fifth. I am not watching my instantaneous mpg so I am not aware of the mileage and drive normal. This will also let me know if my BOV affects the computer calculated mileage versus actual.

I've had the AP for some time, and recently reflashed to 1.10.

After searching various threads, I still can't figure out how to switch real time maps. I used the latest manager software, cleared out my old maps, and moved v1.10 base and realtime maps into the AP.

When I connect the AP to the car, I see all of the maps in the AP, and I choose
"91 Stage 1" as the base map to flash...no problems there.

However, after the reflash, when I try to switch maps (to economy, for example), it says "Sending...." but after about 15 seconds gives me an error message saying it cannot communicate w ECU.

Am I doing it wrong???

^^Doesn't sound like you are doing anything wrong. It may be a cable problem but I would give Cobb tech support a call. There may be a problem with your AP and they could help you out.

Yeah, but what if your cruising at a constant 80Mph (at 3000 Rpms)?
Wouldn't partial boost be on constantly at that speed? I would hope that the wastegate could bleed off boost at cruising speed so your not into the turbo on the whole trip.

You don't need boost to maintain cruising speeds, unless your idea of a cruising speed is very superlegal. You won't be building boost at a constant 80 mph on level roads. Install a boost gauge and you'll see what I mean, the car will be in vacuum, not boost. The only car I've ever seen that needed boost to hold 80 mph was an SVO mustang with a blown head gasket after a disasterous track outing

I've hit 27MPG(Trip Comp) on my bone stock 5EAT Base LGT with 12k miles and Mobil 1 10W-30, while doing 70-80MPH with the cruise control.

...bringing back a REALLY old thread, but i reflashed to economy mode today, and I swear in very mixed driving (hills, in the city, on the highway, stuck in traffic, etc. etc. etc.) it netted me something in the neighborhood of an extra 5 mpg or so over a stage 1 map with the same physical mods. I need to keep at it to see if this holds true (it's only been about 60 or 70 miles on this map), but I think if I drove with more discipline in addition to the map, I can get more out of it.

It makes more power at cruise do to additional timing. YMMY really applies ;)

Why a staged power map can't run this same timing here, I don't know.. My st maps look like the econ maps in this region.

Put a number on this madness ? 25 ? 28 ? 30 ? 33 ? mpg ?

Well, after a little while, the ECU did learn a bit and compensated a little bit for my light foot. It leveled off at about an extra 3 mpg, maybe? I don't really have set figures though because, coincidentally, my driving patterns changed to be way more city driving than usual. I really hesitate to guess.

Also, I just finished up with my job (going back to school in the fall), so to celebrate I flashed back to fast again, just for a little while. I probably should pick one and stick with it for a while, so I don't confuse the ECU too much.

On the contrary to popular belief on this site, the ecu doesn't learn driving habits.

well then i dunno what's going on with in there. maybe my car is just moody.

If I'm currently stage 2 (Rallitek reflash done by p.o. at Rallitek's shop), can I buy an AP and run an Economy map? I'm going to drive 6 000 kms to and from Florida and could really use the mileage...

just stay out of boost as much as possible... you get the same gas mileage in vacuum if you were tuned or not. Use your cruise control to accelerate, then you'll only boost up to 8psi instead of your foot being heavy and inconsistent.

ya know when i 1st got my car and before i had cooling problems i got 27-30mpg highway and 20 round town

my faulty thermostat didnt help things

as of my last 800 miles ive averaged 25.2mpg mixed driving ...hwy im starting to see 28-30 again, and 24 around town

ive learned to drive around town off boost, get a boost gauge, it helps

Hey, I was wondering the same thing as Hugo L. I'm currently at Stage 2 with a Cobb downpipe / STI uppipe. Can Cobb's economy mode map be safely run with a Stage 2 setup? I realize the map would have to be run real-time since it doesn't disable CELs as a basemap, but other than that I don't know. I'm currently paying about $11.50 a gallon (with all conversions for exchange rates and liters-to-gallons) living in Portugal, so I'm looking for anything that can help. Thanks!

Yes it will be fine as long as you still have the stock intake box, regardless if you are stg 2 or not. The changes for the mostpart are in the partial throttle regions. (except for boost)
