I listen to a lot of trance and techno, and I felt the sound was weak with the sub and amp, without the sub/amp I felt it was really pitiful. I had the bass turned up to max on the head unit on the dash, and the bass was something but nothing to really write home about. Does anyone know if you can turn the bass up on the sub/amp unit itself under the driver's seat? Is there a dial or control to adjust it on the amp/sub unit itself? That was my only complaint with the whole car - the lacking sound and the amp/sub that improves the sound but not enough. If that could be tuned up a few notches, I'd be happy.

There are, as I recall, two knobs on the sub, one for volume and one for the cutoff frequency. However, given the size of the sub don't get your hopes up too high.

I just have the regular speakers and it seems like they distort too easily considering that the stock head unit puts out a decent amount of power.. I like listening to music at louder listening levels every now and then. Anyone who's done a speaker upgrade noticed if it's much of an improvement at louder listening levels?

I think this same problem applies in all Subaru's that dont have the upgraded package. My current MY01 sounds pretty neat but doesnt have the base that I would really like. My sister has had the same problem in her car (WRX) and has now replaced everything with a totally upgraded system using a mix of products. The boot is totally kitted out with amps and subs and looks trick.
You might not want to go to that extreme so I would start looking at a few mid range speakers and upgrade from there. Franz yr drama seems to be the speakers and not the power output from the head unit, this might be a cheap but effective way of upgrading the system for little cost.

two words.. Infinity Basslink! I think that's the better option.
