View Full Version : Gauge ring light up blue (+red) or just red?
I've seen pics implying both ways. I like the blue (gives it a Red White and Blue)
Do we know if they actually light up blue or not, or is just red and white?
Thank you for tuning in.

It has pretty much been proven that the blue hue is a reflection from the white line that only appears because of the long exposure time in the professional photos. The pictures evidently aren't a very good representation of what they look like. :(

That's right - the colours are red and white. It's also true that the display is much clearer and brighter than in any photo I've seen. It's very impressive, especially at night.

so is it kinda like bmw gauge????

It's similar to the STi. BMW doesn't have electro-luminescent gauges. They are very unique.
I'm skeptical of that photo overexposure idea. The latest brochure from the GT announcement clearly shows the blue line on an MPH scale guage.

notice how the blue fads away wherever the white lines stop. Look at the blue around the oil temp symbol, gas sybol, Full/Empty, and Hot/Cold.

Be skeptical no more. Be assured there is no blue in the display - unless there's a fault with mine.

How does it look in the daylight? In this picture (http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/attachment.php?s=&postid=5357396) it doesn't look nearly as amazing. STill gets the job done, though.

The blue hue is a reflection of the WHITE gauge lighting onto the BLACK colored radial plastic piece that surrounds the flat gauge display. There is no actual BLUE lighting in the gauge display itself. :)

The red rings are faint, but noticeable in daylight. The gauges and pointers are bright enough though and easily seen. It looks a whole lot more impressive at night. Also, when turning ignition on, the dash lights up and all pointers do a bit of a dance. When turning off, everything goes off immediately except for the red rings which slowly fade into the background.

If we get half the coolness of the JDM ones, it will still be better than the current ones. ;)

People were bitchin' about the lack of the blue ring around the gauges on the "other" forum. I thought it was funny as hell when someone pointed out that it's just a reflection. Just made some people look like monkeys. I really like the gauges. Subaru's use of the gauges swinging to full position on startup as a selling point is kinda pathetic though. It should be one of those little bonuses for people who buy the car or take the time to go look at it. It's not a selling point.

Right, it's not a selling point at all. However, little design "treats" can stick in a person's mind and magically sell the car. Gauges are a good thing to spruce up because it's really what you look at more than anything else in the car as a driver. You don't stand outside the car and stare at the bumpers, and you don't stare at the seats that you're sitting in. You're watching the road and glancing down at the gauges.
It's interesting to hear from people who've worked in car sales to see what "sold" the person on a car. I think the most amazing was somebody on nasioc saying that a guy came in and wanted a white vehicle w/ black interior. Car, truck, or whatever, so he left in a white/black Pathfinder.

Yeah I read that too. I can only imagine what kind of a consumer that guy is. People like that make us educated consumers look like rocket scientists. Either that or he has too much money and is buying a car for his spoiled teenager.
I completely agree with you about the gauge sweep, it is something that's pretty cool.. and increases the "quality feel" of the car. But it's not something that should be put as a seperate selling point on a brochure.

From a marketing standpoint, it's definitely worth putting in the brochure as a separate point. I guess I should say that sweeping gauges SHOULDN'T be a selling point, but reality for many buyers is that sometimes little things like that ARE selling points.
Pretty much every car that has "unique" gauges do feature them. Look at the Chronograph gauges of the IS300, the cool gauges in the V60R/V70R, VW Beetle, and I remember back to the very first gauge treatment- Maxima SE back in about 1989 with the black on white gauges. They all promoted this as a selling point, or at least did it to educate people on how to differentiate the car from the "regular" brethren.

We will just have to agree to disagree. I do see your point though. It may be just me but I would never base any merit on a decision of this magnitude over a novelty such as these gauges.
They are gonna be sweeeeet though!
It is those cool little 'touches' that distinguish these cars from one another. It brings the pride of ownership that makes a Rolex more valuable then a Timex, for example.
Otherwise, we'd all be driving the same car.

So true akm. The guages in the STi are pretty cool, but do they alone sell the car, nope, its just a distinguishing feature. :) A nice one at that. ;)
As sad as it sounds, the STi gauges are one of the things that WERE a selling point for me for that car. So much to the point I was rationalizing:
"well, I could get a WRX and ADD the STi gauges, or just get an STi, that would get me these additional 'bling' features like the brembos and blue interior...of course I could ADD bling brembos and a blue interior, but now I'm paying more then just getting the STi...and I still won't have a six-speed.....but either way, I'll get the gauges."
Fortunately I was too poor to pull the trigger on an STi OR a WRX so now I can drool over the Legacy while I save...
(Wish my 97 Impreza 'L' wagon had nifty gauges...sigh)

^^Brembos are bling but the gauges aren't. LOL. You're a good man to admit it. Yeah, those gauges look pretty cool. One thing that seems different is that I thought the STi gauges were completely black until you turn the car on, and the shot of the USDM gauges looks like the white speed markers shows all the time.
