I presume they will be made in Indiana or will it be Japan ?

Subaru of Indiana Automotive Inc.

The $1.1 billion plant opened in 1989 on an 820-acre site.
• Location: Lafayette
• SIA owner: Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd.
• Models made now: Subaru: Baja, Legacy, Outback Isuzu: Axiom, Rodeo
• Vehicles produced 2003: 122,232
• Maximum production capacity: 261,000 vehicles

Dealers expect the new models will begin to reach showrooms in late April and May. SIA is now in pre-pilot production, assembling test models to tune the machinery. It is set to build cars for the market the first week of March.

For the USDM, at least, I won't think we'll see any taking the boat trip across the pond. SIA is my guess.

INDIANA??? :o I am now going to cheer for the "COLTS" to win the Superbowl, so that all the assembly workers in Indy will be happy as they build up our cars!!! :)

SIA is already retooling in anticipation of the new Legacy. They have started hiring back people who were laid off when Isuzu went offline.

I think Indy too, but I would prefer Japan.

Our SIA built cars have been just as reliable as our Gunma built cars. A few hickups here and there, but same basic fit and finish and reliability.

It's only assembled in Indiana. The parts are all from Japan. It's not about where we WANT it assembled. It WILL be assembled in Indiana. Sorry guys. :( If we had US made content, prices could be held very reasonable as well. That's why BMW and Honda and so many others have US factories- not just assembly plants.

Very true Preston, particularly with the current Yen to Dollar situation. Then they'd have a bunch of the same job issue we have too in mfg lately.

Keep the jobs in the US. Build them in Indy....

We should be voting for Indy for every superbowl, at least to be Legacy or Outback owners should.

I agree, keep the jobs in the U.S. I also wonder if considering the low dollar and increase in desired sales, if they may begin sourcing parts from the U.S. and do more of the manufacturing here. :?:

Its practically the only manufacturing we've got left.

Indiana's gonna have to do some work if they want to get by the Pats next year.

I would like to mention the last Acura CL and TL models. All major parts were built in the US except the auto transmission which was shipped in from Japan.

Geuss which part had major failure rates. :)

I've seen some US factories for foreign manufacturers be iffy. Case in point would be Mercedes M-class. However, from what I've seen from Toyota and Honda, the US products seem pretty comparable to Japan built cars. Of course, on the other hand, Toyota makes a point of building all its Lexii in Japan.

Hey found this article.. seems that it's going to be built in the us.

Lafayette Subaru plant switches gears

Associated Press
February 3, 2004

LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Lafayette-based Subaru of Indiana says it will produce its last vehicle for former partner Isuzu this July.

Subaru employs about 2,800 people at the plant in Lafayette. Subaru has recalled more than 150 workers during the last eight months to work on the 2005 Subaru Legacy line.
Fuji Heavy Industries of Japan, Subaru's parent company, became sole owner of the billion-dollar factory in January, 2003.

Slumping sales forced 13-year partner Isuzu to sell its 49 percent stake in the plant.

Subaru had continued building vehicles for Isuzu under contract.

Hmm... My 2000 GT wagon begs to differ. I love the car but there are lot of minor quality issues. I won't list them but I feel like trading the car in because of minor nuances...but then I love the car. If they build it at japan, it will take the jobs away from state. One more thing to think about. :(

We've had the same amount of issues with my dad's 2000 Leg L Wagon as my mom's 2000 RS Sedan. Both 5MT. Some minor, some a bit more major, all covered under warranty I think.

Japan-built 1990 5MT wagon. 236,000+ miles and still have the original alternator, PS pump, wheel bearings, sensors, never touched the fuel or ignition system (except for fuel filters, plugs and wires). Never even thrown a CEL and easily passes MA emissions (although only one more to go  ). My sister's 1993 auto sedan built in the US had some small issues and the interior wasn't as well built.

The MY2005 (or MY 2004.5?) Legacy 2.5GT that I saw at the Montreal Auto Show on January 12th had the "Made/assembled in Indiana" sticker on it.
