Anyone have a suggestion for a boost gauge that matches the look of the red/blue color gauges?

Several people and myself have suggested Defi BF gauges. I heard someone talk about VDO gauges?

Just went around NASIOC. Saw this in one of the posts: High res. link (1.6MB) (http://www.defi-shop.com/images/BFamber-Ind2-high.pdf), Low res. link (100KB) (http://www.defi-shop.com/images/BFamber-Ind2-low.pdf) - Defi is coming out with the BF gauge in an red/amber color, similar to that of the Legacy and STi.

What do you think of the current Defi BF gauges? They fit that description, sort of, right?

IIRC, the Legacy gauges are made by Defi right? I just can't spend the money on Defi gauges.

Here's the STi Genome boost gauge for the JDM market. It's a Defi:

What's looking better and better is LCD based guages.. Ecutek has a product like this, but I bet the CAN bus outputs are easy enough to decode, if someone wants. So a cheap LCD screen + an old laptop + CAN interface. It should be able to make the right color/type gauges on the LCD screen for all ECU monitored sensors, plus it can be an MP3 jukebox and NAV unit.
Just need some open source software :)
The Defi BF gauge is close, but there is really no where good to put it, plus it's expensive..

The Defi gauges are probably the best on the market.....but the most expensive as well. Another really good alternative is Autometer. http://www.autometer.com/
My favourite is the Cobalt series but these gauges run around $200 US. I still consider that expensive for a gauge but you get what you pay for. Usually they have a better accuracy.
If that is still to much, they have some $50-80 gauges that will work just fine.

a note of caution regarding the front A pillar- the side curtain airbags go at least halfway down the A pillar. I noticed this when they changed mine out as part of the recall. Not sure where to mount any additional gauges unless it was in a pod on the dash somewhere.

Good point- hadn't considered that. I'm hoping someone figures out how to add something very integrated looking like maybe an attachment for the center dash pocket.

I saw some interesting mounts where you replace your current driver dash panel that has 2 mounts right beside the cars other gauges. It is hard to explain. You can see here what I mean. http://hp.autometer.com/products/mounting_solutions/inst_clust_import/inst_clust_import.html
Picture is small, but you get the idea. As of yet there isn't a mount for the 05 Leg.
There are some center panels that might work though.

Im sticking with u Deer, instead of drilling or placing a boost guage that doesnt fit in, I would go the LCD option especially if Subaru were to bring out the SatNav system. It shouldnt be too hard to hook up the Boost into that system once u had a menu up and running.

The STi Genome gauges match the cluster in the Version 7 STi Type RA perfectly. They also match the vanilla Version 7 STi apart from the needles...in the main cluster they're amber and the Genome gauges are red.
The Version 8 Impreza STi cluster is the same setup as the USDM cluster. The Genome gauges don't match very well at all.
I'd shoot for the Defi-Link gauges...they seem to look really good in that PDF!!

Another one. Looks like a modded omori.
Yeah it's for a B6 audi, but it does match our gauges too (better even, I think)! $260 with all their custom molded plastic bits, but we could probably convince them to sell the gauge only for a lot less.

09-16-2004, 06:37 PM
I just measured out where I'm gonna put one - there's room for two 2 1/16 inch gauges in the cubby hole above the trip computer. I'll just make a plate to mount the gauges in - a boost gauge and maybe an oil pressure.
Are you going to leave the door?
devobuzz
09-17-2004, 08:06 AM
Yeh I think so - it provides shade to the gauges to make them easier to read (that's my excuse for keeping the door). Actually I don't want to start cutting things up!
Hmm...I'm thinking about a couple gauges and a V1 remote display in there. I haven't figure out if there'd be enough space though yet. At least boost and the v1 would be nice. Being able to close the door to hide that stuff is even better.
*Jedimaster*
09-17-2004, 09:37 AM
Hmm- I'm only interested in the boost guage- maybe I'll rig up a divider so I can still use some of the storage space. I was going to cast a pod for the dash or a pillar but this sounds like a much better way- and whoever said that you'd be able to close it to hide the goodies and it would provide shade for the gauge has me sold!

Hmmm, two gauges fit in that cubby.
I noticed that other than a boost gauge someone mentioned installing an oil pressure gauge. I was thinking the next important stat to monitor would be EGT temps, but I could be way off.
What other gauge would compliment a boost gauge? Any opinions/suggestions?
*Jedimaster*

I'd be up for oil pressure myself. EGT's aren't really something you need to monitor unless you're reaaaaallllly modding the car.

but I was thinking about getting the Megan boost gauge too,...Looks good and is cheap,..I would like to get the DEFI BF gauge, but for $300, Id rather save it and get an AP first,..

What do you think?? Not bad for $50 shipped,..
btw, oil pressure gauge would be good to know since you wouldnt be starving your engine of oil, but I think this is more for peeps who race or have "built" engines,..
..but water temps good too if you live in hot locals and need to know if you're running hot due to no antifreeze or leaks from bad maintanence or hoses etc,..

Instead of guages, are there data monitors that connect directly to the ECU instead of into the engine bay and can provide me info about my EGT, Oil Temperature and the other stuff Boost, Oil Pressure, Coolant Temperature, etc, etc?
Like a small rectangular box with an LED display that splices into the ECU harness and just displays what the engine's sensors are reading.
The gauges seem to be more of a light show and you would need a ton of em for each sensor. Since I run the car hard, I'm looking for a consolidated electronic monitor that can help me guage and understand when the car is running best.

The delta display is pricey. I have EcuTeK but the cost of the display and the custom install (our cubby is not DIN sized) would run over a grand. KTR Performance did a custom install.
I'm looking at this option: http://www.zeitronix.com/Products/zt2/zt2.htm. Not bad for wideband and the dimensions are 4.7" x 2" x 0.9" which should fit in our cubby.

I think you meant to say the DashDisplay.
I'm actually thinking of getting the DeltaDash http://www.ecutek.com/products/deltadash/ , $330, and since it doesn't need any splicing, just plug-n-play to my small laptop, I can get all the information I need plus a bunch more without having to fabricate anything or mess with the dashboard.

I don't own a laptop, so I'd have to buy one. Plus, I think it would be a little awkward to have to look over at the passenger seat to look at the laptop while having the cord running to the OBD II port over your legs. Maybe only while tuning but not for everyday.

Why not "under your legs" ? Is it un-impossible according to the theory of relativity? Why can't we just say "close to your legs" which is more inline with the theory of relativity, since it is relativily close to your legs, whether it is over or under ?

The first essential accessory that I added to our 05 Legacy GT was an Autometer Phantom electric vac/boost gauge. I didn't want to loose the mid-dash cubby and wanted the gauge to be clearly visible during all normal driving. The "steering column" type mounts all obscure other instruments or warning lights and no windshield pillar pods are available for this car because of the side curtain airbags. The gauge is mounted in a standard 52mm Autometer pedestal which is hung from the windshield glass using "High-temp. Super Lock" removable surface fasteners. It's very solidly mounted and is easilly visible being just below the normal driving line-of-sight. The Super Lock is cut into 2 in. dia disks with one attached to the windshield glass and the other to the Autometer pedestal. Pressing the gauge in place mounts it securely.
I was able to route the cable around the windshield pillar, under the door seal weatherstrip and through the gap between the inner and outer fenders to get to the engine compartment. The cable is visible in the photo and is circled in red.
The electric Autometer Phantom gauge uses an electronic MAP "manifold absolute pressure" transducer which I plumbed into the line between the manifold and the fuel pressure regulator. I fabricated a couple of brackets out of aluminum bar stock that attach to the existing mounting bolts that hold the fuel pressure regulator (so no new holes need to be drilled). The MAP sensor is mounted with the air nipple facing down to prevent any moisture from accumulating in the sensor and destroying it.
I've had this set up for 6-months and love the Autometer gauge. I've left the lighting color at "white" but this can easilly be changed using the supplied optical filters. The peak recall and boost alarm flashing red LED are both useful and the gauge has worked flawlessly.

Bump for new info....
The Pro gauge oil pressure sending unit has taken a crap. That is 2 sending units in one year.... Plus.. it turns out the sending unit is proprietary. You cannot replace it.... only can buy a new gauge on Ebay.
99.9% of sending units read 0 ohms at 0 psi and increase resistance as pressure increases.
The Pro sending unit reads 260 ohms at 0psi and DECREASES resistance as pressure increases.
I have had 2 sending units die on me... so that is enough. I am going to try either the Autometer Cobalt series or the Autometer Sport-Comp II series gauges.
