Good day gentlemen. I have jus received my 2000 sube legacy B4 rsk. It is my first subaru and i am basically clueless apart from what i've read on the forums. The car seems to be fast but is severly lacking in response, of course this may be due to a needed service since the car came wih 39000k on the odo. but my real question is. Is there any truth that the removal of the cat on the down pipe can damage your turbo? i examined my car and found that what it seems like two separate pipes leading from the engine itself to the exhausts. Which of these is the up or downpipe. and which cat of these two is safe to remove. I read in a previous forum guys removing their downpipes/uppipes and replacing them with STI pipes that have no cats in them. I would like to know which and what is realy safe and worth doing.

Also i have noticed a very large wastegate on the righthand side turbo as opposed to a small one on the left, and i was wondering if this was the reason the initial spool at aroung 3000 rpm was so miniscule to the one that came on at around 5500rpm. and how can i get the first to be like the last; because at 5500 the car really takes off but in lower revs it almost feels normally apirated. i do hope this thread starter is not too long.

By the way i"m from antigua a small iland in the caribbean and my car is the only rsk on island. all help and comments are appreciated. whether threaded or directly to my e-mail which is supremeelohim@hotmail.com

Hi Joel,

Welcome to the board. I've answered this question many times, so forgive me if this is rather direct.

Removing the primary's cat won't damage your turbo, it will in all likelihood kill it. Only time will tell of course, but on the Legacy B4 owners group, one gent was warned, and then his primary failed pronto (he was man enough to come back and tell everyone of his sad story). Others have had better luck (their turbos lasted for a while), but it is well known to those who really do know, that the down pipe cat is a good idea to keep unless lots of supporting mods are going to be done (better for the environment too, but that is for another thread;) ).

I don't know why your car spools at 3k, is it an auto? The small one is the primary, you should be on positive boost around 2200/2500rpm unless you have an exhaust that is not suited to the car (and there are many big name exhausts that don't work with the TT unless supporting mods are done).

Your #1 issue will likely be detonation. Those engines do not like less than 98 or 100 RON fuel, and heat soak will have it pinking like mad in no time. IMHO your best route would be to invest in a tune for your fuel (either via piggy back or ECU re-write), add a smart water sprayer (from the likes of AVO, which monitors oil, boost etc too for you), and a Knock-Link (which will give you a heads up if knock is occuring).

There are no such things as STI down or up pipes for the twin turbos. Even removing the centre pipe cat has risks without extensive supporting mods.

Fundamentally, the TT's turbos are small (that is why the response is so good), but they are not far off their limits in std form. Just remember that.

IMHO, call on Paul @ AVO - he is on here as apexjapan - since he can supply stuff that can make your leggy go much quicker, with the knowledge that he has worked on the development of mods for TTs for a few years, too.

HTH

apexjapan2 and apexjapan are the people to listen to with regard to the car you have, it wasn't sold in the USA.

Dave.
