View Full Version : Where's the beep? (2003 Legacy)

Hi All,

I started a different thread (in the older Legacy section) on this with a different spin. Now my question has changed a bit. Here's the original thread:

http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=118008

My question now is this:
Those of you that have a pre-'05 Legacy or similar, where does the beep come from when you lock and unlock your doors?

It's somewhere in/near the engine compartment, but where specifically?

I've got both headlights out, the airbox out, and I had the fuseblock and washer fluid bottle out.
The beeper is flaky and almost never beeps. I have locked and unlocked the car 50+ times trying to get it to make even a little sound so that I can locate and repair the beeper. My Wife claims that it beeped for her 4 times yesterday but sounded weak. I'm starting to wonder if it ever beeped!

I've been to the dealer and they don't know where it is either.

If anyone with a working pre-'05 beeper can pinpoint it's location for me, I'd really appreciate it! Thanks!

I have an '04 and it doesn't beep, but I have figured out that I also lack the alarm.

It's just a remote opener that I have.

But if you have an alarm it shall be possible to enable/disable the beep. But I like it silent.

Thanks for your response.

We don't have an alarm on the 2003 either. But it did beep when locking and unlocking the doors. Now it usually doesn't. It did a few days ago 4 or 5 times, but not long enough for me to hear it or determine where the beeper was located.

Doesn't ANYONE have a working beeper on a 2001-2004 Legacy that they can pinpoint for us?

Please?

You need at least an '02 - 2000/2001 just honk the horn (which is very annoying, btw).

Okay, thanks for enlightening me! I guess I might be looking for 2002 to 2004 Legacy/Outbacks then.

Does it honk the horn at full volume on yours? That would be kind of annoying!
(I have an old Alpine alarm siren that would start out at a lower volume for about a second and then go full volume. That way, the chirps were quieter.)

This is such a simple problem, I almost feel silly about it. The fix could/should be easy, as soon as I find the beeper. :)

FWIW - It's also NOT located in the passenger wheelwell (behind the plastic cover) or under the lower windshield trim (that the wipers sit above).

I also didn't find it underneath the fuse block in the engine compartment. I don't see how it could be under the battery and it's not behind or under the Washer Fluid bottle.

I've looked again in the headlight openings (because I had the headlights out all weekend.)

I had to change the inner front passenger side CV boot on Saturday and while under the car, I didn't see anything that looked like it would beep. (Plus, that would be a poor location for it.)

I haven't checked behind the driver's side wheelwell trim yet. It seems unlikely to be there since that is the side with the wiper motor and a lot of water drains on that side.

This is just crazy. I wish it would beep for me a handful of times so I could locate it and fix it!

Just to add a data point, on my '05 GT, the beeper is located in the passenger side fender somewhere near the airbox. I haven't seen it yet, but that's where the sound is coming from.

Yeah, it's full volume - Not fun, especially since I used to get home from work at 11:45 PM everynight (felt like a dick locking my car! lol).
