Hi All,
I've been reading this site for a while and thought I'd say hi!
I bought a 2004 Liberty GT Premium (leather, sunroof etc) sedan last week and have enjoyed driving it here.
There seems to be a few differences between the Australian model and the US model:
1) We get the 2.0T and you get the 2.5T
2) Our key has the alarm/boot release buttons built in.
3) We do not have a manual Liberty yet, although that is coming apparently.
4) We call is a Liberty you call it a Legacy :)
5) We get 17" mags and the NZ guys get 18"!!! argh!
Just like you we dont get the HID's or the NAVI, which sucks.
Other than that I'm pretty thrilled with the car - it goes pretty well, but I'm still running it in, so I'm not going over 4000rpm (well not too often anyways :-))
I do have a small problem, the front brakes are a making a grinding noise when I pull to a stop. I have notified the dealer, and they will look at it when I get to 5000km.
I'd love to hear some of the feedback you guys have in regards to your new cars.
Cheers,
Matt
Hi , and welcome to the board.

I've had the same problem (JDM specB wagon almost 10K), It gets worse when after driving around town, so i reckon it happens most when the breaks heat up. After a long drive (fully laden) along the Izu skyline and down the Hakone turnpike (apexjapan boys will know what I'm talking about) the front left break also started 'juddering' but after a while driving normal it was back to normal - I guess they had cooled down.
Do these symptoms ring a bell with anyone.
I checked out the Liberty when I was in Sydney this year, perhaps you can help me. I saw many on the dealership lots with headlight 'protectors' that also matched the color of the car.
Have you seen these and where can we get them?
And welcome to the board!

Welcome to the boards. I hear a 2.5L version may be headed your way in the near future. ;)
As per the brake issue, hmm, the juddering sounds almost like warping, but if it goes away, I don't think it would be that. In any case, good reasoning for me to upgrade to Carbotech Bobcats!

I had a grinding kind of noise on my Miata when I had the rotors turned. Every time I came to a stop, I heard a quiet grinding "WHEEEEEEeeeeeeww" sound as the pads smoothed out the rotors. That kind of noise or more metal on metal grinding?

Hi,
I think this is what you are talking about:
http://users.chariot.net.au/~mtarone/Liberty/gt-eyelids.jpeg
Yes, you can get these here in Australia.
The cost is $280.90AUD inc tax from my local Suby dealer.
There are plenty in stock, so if you want a set; let me know I'd be more than happy to work out something for you and ship them over.
Send me an email to mtarone@internode.on.net if you or anyone else is interested.
Cheers,
Matt

Its more of a scraping noise that sounds like metal on metal grinding.

Yikes! :o Any problems when you try to brake? I don't know if I could wait until 5000km. Unless you are already at 4000+? :)

The brake performance is just fine.
I just spoke to the dealer again, he suggested that I brake hard a couple of times and that should fix the problem ???
Anyway, I just went for a quick drive and it seems to have fixed it up.
:|
Anyhow, I'll see if the problem comes back to haunt me!
Cheerio,
Matt

I have done 600km so far, if it comes back I'll take it in next week to get it fixed.
The grinding started with me quite early on as well, and there have no situations where I've been worried about driving the car. In a week or so my car will be in for its 10K check so I'll see what they come back with.
If it is the pads, what would be a step up - the pink STi pads?

I have heard a few tales from Australia - with some GT's having to have the disks replaced due to being warped.
Replaced by dealer free of charge - so make sure u let them know the prob on servicing.

hahaha...no tales...in Singapore all most all the GT owners I know oredi had their rotors changed....personally I changed 3 sets liao within 8000km mileage alone finally decided to go for Brembos!
Now riding on Brembos...MUCH BETTER! But need some rework for the rear to mount the caliper...also note that our rear uses 2 pairs of hoses (I changed to braided hoses also).
Front brembos are direct bolt-on.

I always wondered why they call it the "Liberty" in Australia? Legacy sounds so much better! :P

Came about because there is a Second world war vets trust called the Legacy Trust.
During WW2 many Australian POW were badly mistreated by the Japanese.
It was therefore considered poor taste by Subaru Aussie to bring a Japanese car out with that name at the time.

I've done the 10K km service and the dealer 'cleaned' up the breaks. No problems yet, but after looking at honest john's column in the Telegraph, it appears as it may have been me causing the problem driving in the Tokyo traffic and holding on the break too long after stopping.
I love my Peugeot 406 2·0 TD estate, but at its first service the discs needed skimming to cure a braking vibration - something I had not encountered with any previous car. The second service is almost due and the problem is beginning to occur again. Should I be worried?
J.R., via e-mail
This is common on 406s, but not universal. It is usually caused by staying on the pedal too long after sustained braking. This prevents heat dispersing from the part of the disc that is clamped by the pads, which leads to warping.
Maybe I should start using the hand brake a bit more at the lights.

After 10K it will be interesting to see if they are now bedded in. Keep us up to date during the next service cycle.
I haven't had grinding after driving in traffic for long periods, and when I did experience problems it was in the hills going down long stretches when you either have to keep the car in a low gear or keep using the breaks.
Apart from that no other problems in the first 10K, apart from 1 brush with the law for speeding but i was let off do a problem with communication.
